Dr. Gutierrez' scholarship focuses on equity issues in mathematics education, paying particular attention to how race, class, and language affect teaching and learning. Through in-depth analyses of effective teaching/learning communities and longitudinal studies of developing and practicing teachers, her work challenges deficit views of students who are Latin@/x, Black, and/or American Indian and suggests that mathematics teachers need to be prepared with much more than just content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, or knowledge of diverse students if they are going to be successful. I have a slightly different take. I think that there is a an element of the "15 seconds of fame" in this one. In a crowded field of Liberal attention seekers, it is becoming more and more difficult to get a glimmer of the spotlight. So, it would seem, that they are trying to out-Liberal one another, to see who can come up with the most outrageous statements with the thinnest line back to any reality.

Just when you think that the last Liberal "philosopher" has come up with the most bizarre collection of unwarranted conclusions, another one steps forward and says "hold my beer."

Let's see, all those black mathematicians at NASA in the 60's (from the movie "Hidden Figures"), I guess they didn't exist. And 'algebra' and 'algorithm' both have arabic origins (from mathematician Al-Khwarizmi); so I guess arabs are white too to this 'professor' who apparently didn't pay much attention to the origins and history of her chosen field.....

There are three elements of this "news" report that I find incredibly sad -- that someone can be a Math professor who apparently makes a living off of "research" monies applied to Progressive social / education theories, that the University she works for finds value in her endeavors and stands behind her, and that due to the "social justice" angle this makes front-page news. We live in treacherous times where "norms", morals, ethics, decency and common sense are not viewed as good and correct. The only correct things according to what we are fed as our daily ration of propaganda are those deemed correct by the Progressives to suit their ends. Treachery, indeed.
