Winchester shell with slug AND buckshot

Just noticed this at my local Academy. Looked interesting enough to snap an iPhone pic

Anyone ever tried this? Both a rifled slug AND three 00 buckshot in a 12-gauge shell ..... OUCH!

I haven't seen that but I have a bedroom pump gun with 5 Remington rounds that are intended for home defense. The rounds are a mixture of #2 and # 4 shot in the same hull. I have tested for feeding and ejection but have not fired it. Reminton calls theirs "HD, the ultimate home defense."

Yeah, those Remington HD rounds were sitting right next to these on the shelf and they were $24 for 10 shells ... OUCH

So far I've had best luck (as far as patterning on cardboard) with the top-of-the-line Federal Premium law enforcement buckshot. Groups into 3 inch square at 15 yards with a 20-inch barrel - that's the equivalent of NINE .32-caliber bullets moving at 1300 fps muzzle velocity (find me a .32 that will do that) all at the same time .... you ain't gettin up from that.

Plus I can pick it up at GT Distributors in Austin for $3.99 per 5 rounds - same price as the basic Remington and Winchester buckshot loads that pattern about 7 inches at 15 yards 20-inc barrel. Speer Lawman is a dollar cheaper per box at GT's and patterns about 5 inches

I haven't seen these, but they appear to be the latest take on the "buck and ball" loads that have been popular since muzzleloading days.

Centurion and others currently offer the load in either .65 ball and 6 buck or .58 ball and 9 buck.

$14.99 for 10!! Thats the real ouch part of these. I load my 1300 defender with 8 Remington Managed Recoil 00 Buckshot, I get 50% more shells for the same price. I believe they started making these in .410 first for the Judge shooters out there and moved to the larger bore when the demand came.

I buy that Sellor and bellot 3" magnum 00 buck that Cheaper than Dirt sells. It's 25 rounds to a box and holds real tight all the way out to 25-30 yards out of my 870 pump with a full choke.I Live in a very densely wooded area and have used that set-up for years to take deer and hogs( neck/shoulder shots). the one thing I have noticed is there is always one ball at the point of aim no matter how far out I shoot ( 50 yards is the furthest I ever papered it on ) Anyhow, I wonder if the same principle would hold with that ammo that has the slug in it?

Check out the June issue of Guns and Ammo. They did a review of the Winchester PDX1 ammo for 12 ga and the .410 for the Judge. Might be able to find it on their website as well.

I'll find you a .30 handgun round that will beat that - 7.62x25 Tokarev. They push upwards of 1700fps.

More on topic, I don't really care for weird and expensive gimmick rounds. I keep Winchester Supreme 3" 00 Buck (12 pellets, 1400fps) in my HD shotty. They run $10 per box of 5. I keep both 2 3/4" and 3" slugs around, as well as other varieties of buckshot. Spread is irrelevant at any distance in our apartment, and practice with the shotgun is generally done with Estate 2 3/4" #4 Buck, as it's a good and inexpensive alternative for practice.

Yes, but it costs a lot in taxes and takes months for the paperwork to have one that will do it 18 times with a single trigger pull. This sends 18 1300fps pellets downrange five times for $9 with express shipping available.

Thanks for the link. I agree, based on those results, I'm not impressed. Seems this is no more effective that standard slug round AND adds in the possibility of a flyer from one of the errant buckshot striking an innocent bystander or at best damaging property.

You should try Hornady's TAP FPD with flight control "tightwad" buck shot. I've had good results with it from my 870.
