Just note... I wasn't using 'tier 1'. I was saying how it's used by folks on the boards of AR sites.

I personally think any of the 3 rifles listed are great rifles. And like you said, it comes down to what you want it for.


When I bought my first AR (recently), I went through this process. My need came down to this ranking:

1) Competitive Shooting (3 gun)
1) a problem arises scenario... hurricane, end of the world, society collapse... hehe. Yes, I'm thinking about that as a possibility and it played into my decision.
1) Carbine classes & training
(those 3 tied for 1st)
4) Fun at the range, plinking
5) Long range / precision shooting


I ended up with a Daniel Defense M4v1. I'm thrilled with it so far. (I've shot it all of 2 times now!)
I'm very happy with my purchase. However, I was at the range next to a guy with a new RRA, and he was out shooting me... that's for sure. Rifle? Maybe, but most likely the shooter.

I think the primary thing is to get yourself to a level where you will actually see the benefits of each of these rifles based on their strengths.
I know I'm not good enough to do that yet. I could spend $4000 on another rifle and shoot it just as well (or poorly) as I am with my DD right now.
My next $$ is going into me. I need to learn so I can maximize what I got. Also, as I learn, I know you'll find things I want to change/modify.

I started this poll for one reason.

I want the S&W M&P but think for some reason that the RRA offers more versalitility.

Seeing the poll results and only one vote for RRA is to me surprising.

I recently moved to Tx and live in Pearland I have a S&W M&P MOE with some ergonomic upgrades and a Burris AR-332 but nothing crazy...

My rant wasn't aimed at you, sorry if you took it that way. it was aimed at fanboys on websites who insist that if it ain't a [insert name of holy wazoo triple lindy weapon which is the favored choice of special forces operators], it ain't nuthin. My guess is that most of them still live with their mothers and don't have a girlfriend.

That's funny and probably very true.

Me I'm 28 years married and have two in college including one at A&M. That's why I'm having to use some common sense in making this purchase.

I'm a solid middle of the road kind of guy and my purchase will reflect those values.

If you don't need to know or understand the following listed terms, than most likely any off the shelf rifle from a major manufacturer will suit your needs, unless you need ultra precision like TAM with the varminting stuff. All the noise on the plethora of forums surrounding the AR platform are full of people that either want or need to know these things. I feel that in actual practice, this is a small percentage of AR shooters.

The difference between the various types of bolt carrier groups
What a carrier key is or how well it is staked
What M4 feed ramps look like
Which length gas system a rifle has
What the Technical Design Plan is
The HPT and MPI testing done on metal components.

But - of the weapons listed the DD is the "better" gun. All of them can be accurized for the right amount of coin.

It's also (and more commonly) known as the technical data package - the original specs and requirements for an m-4 or AR. If it's not a Colt (who owns the plans) then it literally is a copy. Firms that license the design for .mil production pay Colt a royalty and cannot use or sell a rifle built from it for commercial purposes.
