Mosin Nagant

I am thinking about picking up a Mosin Nagant at the High Caliber Gun Show at the GRB later this month. My price range is from $100-150 but I can't decide if I should look for a 91/30 or a carbine type. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I've got a 1942 M91/30 and love it. I had a minor problem with the recoil and that steel buttplate, but a medium sized limbsaver cured that. I normally shoot 203gr Brown Bear or Silver Bear (GPSR doesn't allow FMJ) and can nail the target all day long at 100yrds.

If you're in the DFW area, I'd recommend going to Ammo Depot in Caddo Mills and have a talk with Jack. He's a very serious Mosin collector and can tell you almost everything about almost every model. And here (http://7.62x54r.net/) is a site with tons of info about Mosins.

I've bought 12 in the last six months and love them all. Got an M91, bunch of 91/30's and three M44's. They make great shooters. And usually pretty cheap.

I just bought one Monday, 1938 Tula. Nothing fancy but it is my first one. I have been told that they multiply.
I haven't started the task of cleaning all the crud off of it yet. I'm saving that for my next weekend project.

Do you use any of the rubber butt pads for the Mosin, and if so, how much recoil do they absorb? Passed up quite a few at the last Ft. Worth gun show in the $200+ range, but might reconsider next time. They are beautiful carbines. TIA

When I first got my Mosin I fired 40 rounds the first day and my shoulder was sore. The next day I fired another 20 and thought my arm was going to fall off. On the advise of some members of the forum I bought a plain limbsaver (slip-on rubber buttpad) at Walmart. Now my M91/30 barely kicks anymore. I'd say it easily absorbed 70-80% of the recoil.

Good luck finding an M44 in that price range now... they're getting pretty rare. $100 at a show would be the most I'd spend on one since you can get them pretty cheap online.

There were 2 or 3 M44s at the last Ft. Worth gun show, and I think $200+ is a fair price. Haven't seen one in decent condition for much less. But, they're probably out there somewhere. One other thing, where do you Mosin guys get your headspace gauges?

It's probably fair, but a few years ago I paid $75 for mine so that's a tough pill to swallow.

I've had my 1943 91/30 for about a month now and finally got to the range this last Saturday. I was pleasently surprised when my first 3 shots found the center of the target and the rest of a 20 round box were contained in a ten inch target. For a rifle that cost me $105.00, I think it was money well spent and I don't think it will be my last.
