Colt M4 Accessories
I bought my first M4 this week. I was looking at all the ARs at Dury's and really liked the Colt M4 with Magpul furniture. I haven't fired a Colt rifle since Basic. What kind of accessories do you guys suggest?

Re: Colt M4 Accessories
What do you need? What is your style and use for the rifle? I use mine for work so I added a longer 12" rail (gotta shave or replace gas block) as a I grip the gun long and with my palm at the 9 o clock position and thumb wrapped around like holding a water house.
A light and a sight are must haves for me. BUIS are required by policy, so they are there. Figure out your sling system - I changed from single points to 2 points, so I have the appropriate attachment points installed. A stock that allows for a proper cheek weld or sight picture is nice if you're not weight concious. I hate the A2 grip so a BCM gunfighter, or Magpul MIAD is nice.
With that rail you could add a grip, either a magpul AFG or something upright like a Larue FUG. On my grip I run a pressure switch for my light.
My intended role may be different than yours. What do you plan on doing with it?
Also - some of the best advice I've gotten and given is don't setup your kit for something you only may encounter infrequently (ie building a rig around off hand shooting).

I may have bought the same rifle back in June. LE6920MP-R?clarionite wrote:I bought my first M4 this week. I was looking at all the ARs at Dury's and really liked the Colt M4 with Magpul furniture. I haven't fired a Colt rifle since Basic. What kind of accessories do you guys suggest?
So far, all I have put on it is a light and relfex sight. I went with a cheap little reflex sight to start with because I didn't know if I'd like using something like that or not. I like it so far, so I will probably get something better next year or the year after.

Start with ammunition, it is the best accessory you can buy. Other then that magazines (everybody needs at least 7). Beyond these two it is up to you. What is you intended purpose for the rifle? How much do you have to spend? What do you like in stocks and other furniture?

Re: Colt M4 Accessories
I guess I've never considered a use for the rifle.
I guess it's my have fun at the range, one day shoot 3 gun competitions, buy it before you can't buy them anymore rifle...
If society ends tomorrow (I really don't believe it'll come to that anytime soon) then it'll be nice to have. But I'm not a prepper, I'm not a LEO, and I have no desire to play at being either one. In my best Ray Stevens/ Haircut song / I'm a logger style impression... " I Like Guns!"
I've got enough (for now) pistols and decided to start increasing my collection of rifles. Some have a purpose (Squirrel gun, Deer gun, Varmint gun...) Others are because they're fun to shoot at the range, and some are just because I drool when I look at them. This one, for now, is in the last two categories. If it were legal for me to own a M19 and a M2 and I had the funds, I'd have them too.
I like the idea of the light, and the two point sling. I'm not sure if I want to go with a scope or some other kind of optics. I like the furniture that's on it, but may end up with a tri-rail front grip at some point in the future. If that happens, might want a bipod for the rail.
I'd love to have an M203 launcher for CS/OC grenades and flares. Again, I'm not a prepper, it would just be fun to play with and have just because.

I plan on getting some more pMag 30 round magazines. I haven't shot an AR since the AR15 I fired in basic. What do you guys think of the polymer pMags?Longshot38 wrote:Start with ammunition, it is the best accessory you can buy. Other then that magazines (everybody needs at least 7). As far as funds... Depends on if the wife is in a good mood. Right now she's reading the Shades of Grey trillogy so she's in a good mood. I make a decent living, but have two kids in High School so large purchases don't come all that often.

I don't have the Troy Rail, I have a LE6920MP. It has a MOE vertical grip and MOE hand guard instead.C-dub wrote:I may have bought the same rifle back in June. I looked at an EOTech set of optics while I was there, I didn't know if I'd use it enough to justify the price.

What sights do you like?

Re: Colt M4 Accessories
The sights I LIKE are $300 flip up offset sights. The ones I have are $80 magpuls because they work and are light. All things being equal, I'd run a higher power main scope with a micro t-1 backup.

That is precisely why I started with a cheaper reflex sight. It was only about $45-$50 and has either a red or green reticle and different reticles to select and about 8 levels of brightness. I usually stick aside about 50-100/month now into a gun fund. I use it for anything gun related. When it get's big enough I may use it for a better sight or just wait until this one wears out.clarionite wrote:I don't have the Troy Rail, I have a LE6920MP. I second the pmags and ammo. I also got 2 20-round pmags for when shooting from a bench and the 30-rounders are too long.

Re: Colt M4 Accessories
PMAGS are the best polymer mags on the market. They will take tons of abuse and the followers are the best innovation in AR mags in many years. With that being said there is nothing wrong with C-product magazines either. I have half a dozen stainless ones with Magpul followers and they are fantastic.clarionite wrote:I plan on getting some more pMag 30 round magazines. It is like this many cool and innovative accessories are on the market for an AR, but before jumping off the deep end and using your hard earned money to experiment and figure out what you like get the basics. Ammunition, magazines, and slings are all inexpensive things that are infinitely more valueable and useful then things like furniture, optics, and the latest and greatest whiz bang item. Remember you can't buy skill. So if you have the money to spend on some toys and experiment then jump right in. Otherwise start with the basics and get good with that, then work on refinements.

For slings I like the padded VCAS

I agree. I have the non-padded versions, they are awesome. Simple, effective, and cheap.gigag04 wrote:For slings I like the padded VCAS

Re: Colt M4 Accessories
Magpul sights work well. For mags I prefer Lancer bc of the steel feeding lips. If you get the magpul mags I'd skip on the 3rd gen for a while. Let the masses R&D them for a while first. Some of my rifles I use Aimpoint red dots while my 3 gun rifles I have 1-4x scopes. I prefer the Aimpoint on my bump in the night gun bc of the battery life. If you go with a scope look at the Millet DMS. Great beginners scope. Also forget about a quad rail. I go for modular one's and also look at triggers later down the line
Also ammo and a carbine class will help alot
