No reason for quad rails now days. The modular ones make much more sense. Look at the Troy VTAC ones.

Right. Maybe military or law enforcement might have enough stuff to hang off of all those rails but most of us don't. A good light and a vertical or angled grip is all most people need. Plus the modular ones give a cleaner look IMO and usually have less weight. Again just my opinion.

I know you are in law enforcement and are a long time member so I respect your input a lot. So i am curious as to what reason you could see where a Quad Rail would better serve than a modular one since you can basically add a rail section wherever you need it on the modular ones. I do like a complete rail on the top of my rifles. I just don't see the need for them all the way around my hand guard. If you put rail covers on them then they are way to big round for the way i shoot. I believe we shoot the same way. C-Clamp the hand guard far out on the gun and bring the thumb over the top like you are controlling a water hose. Basically using the vertical grip as more of a handstop.

Having a qual rail enables a user to quickly reconfigure and redeploy the weapon in the case of changing roles. With the variety of QD components, the components can be moved along the full length of the rail, and not just the small areas where short rail panels are attached.

A good example is 3 gunning, where some stages may benefit from a different light, different type of sights (offsets for example) or different size or type of handgrip.

Ok I am following you now. I guess they still do make a lot sense for certain people. I do think for most of us its just added weight though. IMO. I do, however, totally get what you are saying about different roles with the same weapon.

Modern sporting rifles are like Barbies, accessories are only limited by your budget. Take it to the range, enjoy it.....a few thousand rounds later, if you decide on a specific purpose for the rifle(home defense,3 gun,hogs,etc) add what you need. ARFcom has loads of threads that can help with choices.

While we're on the rail subject, any <reputable> modular forends that are two piece drop in? I don't exactly want to monkey around with the gas block, but i'd like a narrow tube like modular rail/handguard. And not that toad ugly thing from Magpull.

I hate the cheese grater quad rails and the rail covers as well. I really want the Troy free float tube, but don't want permanent yet, and I enjoy actually having a functioning bayonnet for some dumb reason(again, on the useless accessory subject).

I personally like the mapul handgaurds but mine had some play in it which always bugged me. However, i think most 2-piece handguards can have that problem. I just shaved my FSP and purchased one of the Troy VTACs that used the factory barrel nut. Its really not that bad to take the Gas Block off and the Delta Ring is even easier. I thought it was going to be much harder.


This would make removing the Taper Pins from the gas block easier. You have to smack them pretty hard to get them moving.

Oh and a bayonett lug on a 16inch barrel is pretty useless. LOL. Takes a really long bayonett to be functional but they do have extended ones that will work.

I have a Colt LE6920 That I bought with OD furniture. I haven't put the vertical grip on it. I'm using a VCAS sling. The only other things I plan on doing is getting a BCM Gunfighter charging handle, a flashlight, and an Aimpoint or Trijicon. I'm keeping it light and simple just like a carbine should be. If I want to carry weight I'll carry my M1A. I have some GI mags but all I use is are my PMags. They are the way to go. Magpul just came out with a third generation PMag earlier this month. the only other mag I'd think about running is the Lancer mags. They are also polymer but have metal surrounding the feedlips. If you are a govt or mil you can get a discount at Brownells. I can get the last version of PMags for 12.30 and the new version for 12.63

I checked out that VCAS sling on their website and thought it looked pretty nice. Then at the Mesquite gun show this past weekend I came across a two point padded VTAC sling for $35 that the guy let me have for $30 because he said he had to charge me the sales tax on the mags and gave me a little break on the sling. Anyway, I got my letters all mixed up (I got three out of four right.) and thought I found the sling you all were talking about until I checked back here yesterday. The one I bought looks very similar to the VCAS sling. I put it on last night and played with it a bit and it seems to be okay, so I'll go with it for now until I find a reason not to.

I bought a midlength half quad rail from Rock River Arms and I like it a lot. It is free floated, has a full rail on top but only a small section at the front on the sides and bottom so it is the best of all of the styles to me. I agree there is not much to attach but lefties and righties need lights on different sides, a grip and/or folding bipod on bottom will see all 4 rails being used. I agree with the Magpul folding BUIS, have them on my SCAR and AR15. AR has a Nikon M223 scope for the main optics as it is intended for distance. The SCAR has Eotech XPS2 and Eotech 3x magnifier as the main optics since it is SBR and intended for CQC.
As far as bipods go I saw a setup at a recent show where the legs were independant and attached to the side rails, this looked way more stable and I have been looking for them seperately sold but cant locate them as of yet. I use a standard 2 point sling on the AR but went with single point on the SCAR, cant say as I prefer either one as best but slings are very subjective IMO.

Thanks everyone. It's given me quite a bit to think about. I'm going to take a look at the slings mentioned. I need to get a good light. And I believe I'll set aside a kitty for an Eotech and magnifier. I looked at one at Top Brass in San Antonio this week, and I liked it. There's a lot of truth in that. It can be very tough to stay within a set range once you start getting into the details. I started out thinking I was going to get a rifle for about $1k and before too long started pushing the $2k area. Fortunately, I began to fall back down to earth and ended up in the $1,300-$1,500 range and found a good one for just under that at $1,250. I am also trying to be reasonable about what my use for the rifle is and might be and not go crazy with some things. That has so far been easier than I thought it was going to be.
