Considering a "fun gun"

Given the fervor right now, my Chief Financial Officer (aka "My Wife") has suggested a new rifle purchase. Partly, I think this is because she sees all those pictures of EBR's on the news and is jealous since my AR15 is pretty plain jane by comparison, even though it's a great gun. I also think it's partly her way of expressing via dollars her political feelings on things, but that's a topic for another sub-forum.

So, I thought it would be interesting to post and see what you guys would suggest as the "fun gun" purchase (if via some miracle from above it was actually in stock somewhere). Obviously, the various LaRue offerings, SCARs, ACRs, etc are out there, but what is actually worth owning if you were only going to buy one?

For all situations, my Henry Survival Rifle, .22LR, is one of the most fun. It's light, accurate and easily packed. Best thing, kids are now able to shoot it since it's light and shorter. I bought it because my uncle used to take me shooting with his and I remembered that fun for 35 years!

My fun gun is my FN FiveSeven. It's my go to gun when I feel like blowing 20+ bucks a mag and get weird looks at the range from the noise and muzzle flash.

Nothing screams fun louder than the ping of a clip springing out of an M1. People flock to them like bees to honey at the range. When I go with my friends and relatives, they all show up with a box of 30-06.

Assuming you can't get your mits on one of those, I recently got a CMMG 22LR upper for which I then got a 50 round black-dog mag. That thing is a hoot if I do say so myself. Not one misfeed or ejection issue in 600 rounds, just one round failed to go off. Aside from gas going to the range, it cost me less than $50 for all that shooting. Just putting it out there.

I think if I were shopping for what I might define as a "fun gun," I'd probably look to a SIG 522. As markthenewf noted, .22LR is one of the few calibers you can still use to plink to your heart's content without breaking the bank.

If you don't have one, another consideration would be a Kalashnikov. Prices are going to be insane, though, if you can find one. But the 7.62x39 round is both practical and, since the AKs are more than happy to shoot steel-cased ammo, is likely to stay less expensive than 5.56.

I suppose, bottom line, for me, is that a "fun gun" should be inexpensive to feed. And ammo prices have done nothing but go up the past decade. Even after the current panic buying is over, I strongly doubt prices will drop all the way back to November 2012 levels. I've joked that if I'd had a crystal ball, early this century I would have taken my 401(k) and used it to buy up ammo. Just imagine the rate of return...

I've been thinking about a nice lever gun in .357 of late. Rossi makes a very nice looking one with a 24" octagonal barrel and a case hardened finish on the receiver. Looks very tasty :)

(also has me thinking about a nice SAA to go with it and maybe a LCR and....my poor budget)
