Economical Single Shot .243

I was very interested in the Remington SPR18 - until I read many discouraging negative reviews.

So, I'm on the hunt for a no frills, good functioning single shot in .243.

Suggestions?

Abraham, the one that first comes to my mind is the Ruger No.1:

The one's I'm most familiar with are the antiques, and those are probably not appropriate for what you're looking for.

New England firearms makes the Handi-rifle in 243. I highly recommend you give it a look.

With the key word being economical I agree 100% with the New England Handi-Rifle. I've dealt with 4 of them in 4 different calibers and every one has one thing in common.......they are amazingly accurate tack drivers. In short, I've found them to be about the most accurate out of the box rifle I've ever fired at ANY price and you get them for $250 or less. My uncle's .223 and my .204 Ruger both shoot 1/2MOA. I purchased my .204 from Davidson's on sale for like $230 I believe, put a $120 Guide Gear (whoever makes it!) 8-32X40 from Sportsman Guide. I now have a scoped varmit rifle for a grand total of
$350 that I consistantly shoot cloverleafs at 100 yards and hits dead point of aim out to about 250 yards. Cool little set-up. I'll post a pic on here when I get a chance. Anyway, point being, that is my experience with them and I would expect the same results out of a .243. Good luck!

Given their overall lack of appeal to the mass market, I hope to find one on sale someday.

As it is, I've found a Savage bolt action repeater for just a little bit more in cost. However, the whole point for me was to keep it really low cost.

I've never been in a pawn shop, but I think I'll start looking there too. If no luck, I'll be zeroing in on a new New England Handi-Rifle.

I want a single shot for many reasons, but mostly because there simplicity appeals to me.

Cool. Keep an eye on Davidson's Gallery of Guns. If you are not familiar with them they are a wholesaler but you will be able to search for dealers in your area. Some of the dealers will actually have a "shopping cart" on their site where it will give you your cost from that particular dealer and allow you to actually order the gun by putting 20% down via credit card and they will ship to the dealer where you will pay the balance and do the paperwork. Some dealers still have to do the ordering but some have the "shopping cart". You'll find that alot of time the dealers will sell through Davidson's a little cheaper than off their shelf as they have no stocked inventory involved. Anyway, they have monthly, weekly, and sometimes Saturday only specials. That's how I got my .204 and I've noticed that one caliber or another of the handi rifle are frequently on their sale list. I've purchased several guns through them and they are really fantastic people to deal with. They've gone "above and beyond" for me on several occasions. Last but not least, any gun you purchase that comes from Davidson's has a life time warrenty on it by Davidson's. I have had one occasion that I blew up a barrel (long story) and they stood behind it. They limit the warrenty to repair or replace the gun only up to the actual amount you paid, not necessarily MSRP or replacement cost, but hey....that's better than most!
