I recently acquired a Mossberg 590. It is relatively easy to switch the safety off, but very difficult to switch it back on. Has anyone encountered that problem before or have a possible solution? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

My 590 was just the opposite, going on is easy, but off was much harder. I just worked at it until it loosened up.

Don't worry, after a couple thousand rounds, it'll might just loosen up enough that the recoil will activate the safety, as the one I shoot habitually does (when you have to tape the safety off, something is wrong). Best solution, buy a Remington, Benelli, or FN. Outside of that, I'd suggest shooting it a lot and oiling it.

If it bothers you, something like
this may be just the ticket:
I will warn you, though - that stupid safety screw Mossberg uses to hold in the button is a total PITA to remove. If you do decide to try it, tape the bejesus out of the area of the receiver that surrounds the button to protect the finish - you will probably have to get pretty medieval with the screw to remove it... Ask me how I know.
