Mini-30... thoughts?

#1

Post by getamap »

Does anyone have experience with a mini-30? How does it compare to the mini-14 as far as accuracy goes? Is it a solid purchase, or should I look elsewhere? I would like something chambered in a caliber higher than .223, but i'm not sure how i feel about the 7.62.

I think the SKS is a better gun than the Mini-30 in most ways except looks.

I keep getting referrals like "You want an AK? Get a Mini-30 instead, it's a better gun."

In what way? The price is better for the seller? I don't necessarily see the attraction unless you want the familiarity of controls if you already have a Mini-14. Or is their accuracy that much better over an AK or an SKS?

BTW, I'm with you on 7.62 over .223 - but, I kinda like the bigger boom, too.

The sks is a way better system to the mini in regards to ruggedness and the mini is in no
way as rugged as an AK...

As far as looks, that is subjective I guess but I like military pattern firearms above all else know and I was a true bolt fan many moons ago.

I do think the newer mini's have improved their accuracy though and the sks can be plenty accurate enough.

I don't have a Mini-30 but I do have a Mini-14. As much as I like my AK, the Mini sure seems to be made of thicker heavier stuff. Thicker heavier "American" stuff. Unless things have changed in the last 10 - 20 years, eastern bloc steel was thought of to be a little soft.

I have heard from many folks that the accuracy leaves some to be desired. Not that an AK is a tack driver. The AK is combat accurate and incredibly reliable and rugged. The AK is A LOT lighter than a Mini. Mags are cheaper and accessories are plentiful. The Mini is a good rifle, but for the money you could get an AK a couple of mags and a case of ammo. Unless you just get a crazy deal on a Mini. I looked long and hard at a Mini 30 before I bought my AK.

I suppose it depends on what you're intentions are. If it's just for plinking at the range, get an AK as it'll be cheaper and more mags available. If it's for hunting, get the Mini 30 as it'll be easier to mount scope and attach slings.

I guess that's the trouble... i want one rifle to fill too many categories. Perhaps I will get an AK first so I can satisfy the plinking urge and meanwhile save up for an M1a.

Back in the 1980s or so, I had a Mini-30 and several SKS rifles.
I put the mini-3o and a Ranch Rifle into folder stocks and got hi-cap mags to make them look like the "evil black assault rifle"
I replaced stocks on an SKS to make it look like a hunting rifle.
Then asked people which they'd ban.
Everyone wanted to ban the evil Made in America rifle, but thought the SKS hunting rifle (used by North Vietnamese in war) was ok. (Those black plastic pistol grips and folding stocks make it either a good or evil rifle dontcha know?)

The SKS back then sold for $89.00 (Pre-ban)

I normally am a "buy American" guy, but having had both, :headscratch
Between the two, I'd get an SKS or AK rather than the mini-30
As said above "for the money you could get an AK a couple of mags and a case of ammo."

The only thing .......... if you replace stocks, or other parts, (on any import, like AK/SKS or Saiga shotgun etc etc) be sure to use AMERICAN parts, to comply with U.S. Code - Title 18 - Part 1 - Chapter 44 - § 922(r)
922R http://jobson.us/922r/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
American aftermarket parts are easier to find for those imports, than they are for a Mini-30 though

Example: Saiga Semi-Auto shotgun (based on AK design), throw away the 4 round imported magazine, replace with 15 round American made magazine (I believe that counts as 3 parts, mag, follower and floorplate)

Are'nt the Mini - 30's still made with .308 rifling, unlike the AK's and SKS's that are .311? Seems like I remember something about Mini's having real poor accuracy unless you bought U.S. made 7.62 x 39mm with .308 bullets? Anyway, having shot all three ( SKS, Mini, and AK ) I would definitly go with an AK. My 2 cents.
