Where in world (actually DFW) can I test out my 18.5in Maverick 88 with its self-defense loads? I have some Remington low recoil 00 buck 9 pellet ammo that I would really like to practice with so I know what the recoil is going to be like.
Elm Fork said "You can only use 7, 7 1/2, or 8 shot on the patterning board. If you want to shoot slugs you will have to shoot in my pistol bay 8." So my Remington ammo is no good there.
Garland range only has trap launchers so there would be no heavy shot allowed there.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I would really like to be as proficient as possible with the shotgun. Shooting target loads for trap/skeet is not going to be the same as the 00.

Garland has a bay for self defense shotguns. It's on the far end of the pistol range. I've used it before. they usually hav cardboard boxes stacked up over there for you to use for "patterning." However, i don't remember if there are rules about shot size.

You may want to call DFW Gun Range. They are in Dallas off of I-35 at 1607 Mockinbird. Be sure to post what they tell you or if you find one that will allow to shoot 00 Buck. I curious if you find a place.

Where did you find the 00 Buck low recoil. I would like to find some in 20 guage for my wife, but all I can find is low recoil slugs.

Try Alpine range in FT Worth. If not, then Shoot Smart in FT Worth.

Thanks, I'll call Garland in a little bit, that would be ideal because its so close to Rowlett where I live (SO close in face that people in a certain neighborhood claim to be getting hit with bullets but thats another thread).

If Garland doesn't work i'll check those other ones out.

I think I'm still going to go to Elm Fork this weekend and shoot trap with a friend, just going to use their rental though since I don't have a longer barrel for my shotgun yet.

I take my 500 to Alpine all the time... you can shoot Bird/Buckshot on the 30 yard range, but slugs are only on the 50+yard range.

There was a guy and his young son with a Mossberg on that lane last Friday. I don't know what he did, but he got removed from the range. It was ugly..

I just called Garland and they allow the 00 buck on the shotgun range. They have a bunch of cardboard boxes you can stack to shoot at. The only rule is "they have to be on the ground, can't hang it from a tree like some guy did the other day"
Also, FYI, shotgun rentals are $12 and you have to buy their ammo for it (which is not that cheap).

Magnum Sports in Sanger will let you shoot whatever you have, goes out to 200 yards. Set up a pallet at whatever distance you want, hand a target and blast away. This is where I always go for rifle shooting and it is never crowded........

Garland wasn't so bad. Pretty easy actually. There is a bay at the end f the pistol range where I shot up some cardboard boxes. Got a good feel for the federal low recoil 00 buck I keep in it. Found that I spread a bit high so I know know to aim a bit low.
