I need some advice.

I found a Springfield M1 Garand for $1000.

All original.

Throat measures a 1 and he didnt have a bore guage to test the bore.

Wood is very dark. Dents and dings but no cracks.

Serial starts with 58.

Do I go buy it?

Thanks
AB

Thanks OldGringo. I was looking at that site. Doesnt look like they have updated their pricing in a long time and certainly not after Sandy Hook.

This M1 seems to be in between the CMP Service Grade and Correct Grade.

Based on their pricing, I would say it is about $200 high.

But, after Sandy Hook, I dont know.

Thanks,
AB

Just did some more research.

Looks like it is the M1 Carbine that is on the ban list, not the M1 Garand.

I know but it is a rifle I have always wanted.

If was on "some list" I would want to get it ASAP.

Just in case. ;-)

Pre hysteria I'd say it was a little high. Now...well it's hard to say. I don't think you can go wrong with a Service Grade Springfield from the CMP though. I bought one a while back that had an Oct-44 dated receiver with a 1967 dated barrel. it looks like it was rearsenaled and then put away until I bought it. A great piece and from what I understand, they are still out there. An M1 is a wonderful rifle to have and I've never regretted buying mine.

Here's a worksheet for you

Do you own a Garand? [Y] [N]

If [N], go get one.
If [Y], go get one.

In all seriousness, though, if it's in reasonable shape I'd get it. $1000 is a bit high, but you won't regret getting one.

The CMP's prices on the website are current. A grand for a Garand that is between CMP Service Grade and Correct Grade is way high. $995 will get you a Special grade with new barrel and wood and all parts refinished. It's your money.

Let me tell you from experience, the Special Grade is a sweet rifle and accurate. A better alternative to a random Garand unless something else stands out.

I can't see paying $1000 for a carbine. Up to you I guess.

You are absolutley killin' me. I've got a couple of things in mind that I've been saving for a I see that. Gee Whiz. Do you know how hard it is not to toss my plans up in the air and just send off for one of those? That .308 has intrigued me for a while!

Hey Austin Boy, did you get that M1?

Everyone else, I also might have a chance to get an M1. My BIL mentioned that he knows someone that has one and wants to sell it. I mentioned it to the wife and she seems interested. I'm curious about something, though. I always thought the M1 was chambered in 30-06, but I've noticed a few here and there that say they are chambered in 7.62 or .308. Are these knock-offs or replicas or what?

All USGI M1 Garands are chambered in 30-06. The M14 (M1A) is .308 (7.62x51).

You can get a "Special Grade" M1 which is a re-build in .308 from the CMP.

Here's the paragraph that describes the .308 Special Grade;

M1 Garand, CMP Special (.308)
Allow 30-60 days for delivery.
M1 Garand Springfield Armory receiver. This is a completely refurbished rifle consisting of an original M1 Garand Springfield receiver, new production Criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. A .308 spacer block is installed to prevent the loading of a .30-06 round into the chamber.

I've got two 30.06 M1's and have had a hankerin' for one of these for a while now.
