Does anyone have experience with trading in a gun at Cabelas. I have a model 70 7mag built around 1969 that I am thinking about trading in on an entry level AR. Cabelas is less than 2 hours from home and their prices are good on AR's. Just curious if they give good value on used gun.

A '69 Model 70 in 7mm Rem Mag is blue booked at approx $550-$250, depending on condition and features. Blue book values generally represent the kind of price you can expect from a private sale. Gunbroker shows standard used 70's in 7mm selling for about $300. Cabela's will likely offer you significantly less, most likely in the $100-$200 range. They have to make money on the guns they take in.

You're better off cutting out the middle man and selling it to another Texan. Not here though. (Not enough posts.)

You might check out some of the Wal-Marts that are known to sell ARs. They generally have better pricing than most of the other stores for the models they carry.

I had Cabela's quote me on a trade in (Kahr PM9) two years ago...
I sold it in a private transaction for $150 more than they offered me.

No hard feelings, they have a store to run and employees to pay.... But you'll get a better deal if you put a bit of leg work into it.
If the ~30% convenience cost is ok by you, Cabela's makes it very easy to do a trade in.

Thanks for all the answers. Pretty much what I figured. I don't really have a need for AR, just now that they are plentiful and legal to buy I am tempted to get one. I think I will keep the model 70. I don't expect I will ever shoot it, but my Dad bought it new and I have kept it around just because it was his. I think at some point I will just give it to one of my two sons.

You just turned 'legal' and already have two kids!! Dude - slow down...

BTW - keep that Model 70, it is a great gun for the money. Cabela's won't give you much at all.

I took in S&W 360 PD, knowing they had a used one in the used gun section priced at $950, their offer on mine, new in box? $300. Just a "for instance".
