Summer vacation trip via road to D.C.

Hey, I will be driving to D.C. area for a 2 week vacation. I'm wondering if anyone can share there knowledge on what I need to look out for while CC'ing between Texas to D.C. ? I will be going through La., Miss., Ala., Tenn., and finally Va. Anyway, any and all information will be appricated and very helpful. Thanks.

Stay the heck out of DC with your gun is the first thing that comes to mind.

I've never driven it so I don't have any personal experience to share with you about the drive there. You need to go to packing.org and check the laws in each state on your route so that you will be in compliance wherever you go.

With a Texas CHL, you are legal to carry in all the states along your route until you reach DC. If I were you, I would get a hotel or stay with a friend in Virginia--you can't carry in Maryland, and staying in Virginia saves a couple of hours on the end of what is a very long drive. Take the Metro into DC each day and leave your gun locked in your hotel room or car.

As for what you should look out for while carrying along the way, a few more specifics would be helpful (are you planning on driving directly to DC or sightseeing along the way; where are you planning on stopping), Alternatively, take a look at the laws on http://www.handgunlaw.us or http://www.packing.org.

With a TX CHL, you're good all the way to Virginia.

Stay out of drinking establishments, state and national parks, post offices, and schools. Keep your gun concealed. Behave yourself if you're stopped for a traffic violation. Don't flip anyone off. If someone flips you off, ignore it.

Check packing.org to see if the law requires you to declare your CHL status if you're stopped while carrying.

Get a hotel in VA. Don't take the guns to DC or Maryland.

Watch carefully for National Parks. IIRC, The George Washington Parkway coming out of National Airport in VA is considered a National Park which means carry (or even possession of loaded) is prohibited. Get off of GWP ASAP.

Thanks for the tips. It's going to be pretty much a straight drive there with no stops. Might catch a hotel for a few hours rest. I will be staying with relatives on the south west side of DC in Va.

For purposes of clarification. Can I carry my pistol thru National parks dismanteled and ammo seperate. For instance driving thru a park to get to my destination? Are the highways under National law or state when they transition thru a National park or State park?

I would double check national laws via a website. As to your hwy question, I believe your answer is National. That's why GWP is a problem. The GWP runs through Alexandria and Arlington, among others.
