It looks like New Mexico maybe on the road to getting a sane Carry Law that will allow for reciprocitry with Texas. I hope it works out. The NM House has passed HB 641.

I hate to go to NM and not carry.

I've been keeping a close eye on HB 641, I'm worried though, tomarrow is the last day of the NM Legislature.
Sure would be nice to carry in NM next visit, er, after I get my Texas CHL in the mail.

So when is NM going to extend reciprocity to Texas CHL holders? As we all know Texas honors NM holders and I'm ready to carry when I visit Santa Fe and Taos, green-chile cheesburgers at the Owl Cafe in San Antonio and a bunch of my other favorite New Mexico haunts.
Anybody know what's going on with NM?

Well, we are going to NM next week, and while I'm glad they have decided to honor Texas CHLs, I'm not sure that it buys us much.
You could already carry it in your car, and they are an open carry state, so you could carry it on your belt anyway (though it screams shoot me first), and you still can't carry it into ANY place that sells alcohol, even for off-site consumption, like the gas station/stop-n-rob, grocery store or Wal-Mart. I guess I can at least carry it to the toystore and the mall.
I wasn't able to figure out what signs apply to CHL holders there so I'll just use the aparrent intent of the sign. I doubt they are a strict in their sign requirements as TX is.
Oh well. Better than nothing. That's why I live in Texas.

On your return please post your CHL observations and experiences. Especially any potential areas of confusion for Texas CHL holders. Thank you.

So, if you buy a gun in a New Mexico Super Wal Mart, does the manager commit a crime when he carries it out to your car? What about when you're just trying the gun on for size in the store, do you commit a crime because there is alcohol for sale across the store?
Ain't it a shame that politicians have caused us to ask questions like these?

Perhaps that is part of the state revenue system. They ticket you immediately after your purchase, thus collecting not only your sales tax, but also your carrying your purchase to you car tax.

If they sell smokes they got the whole agency covered...

Anyone EVER seen stats to back this up?
I think this is an old wive's tale, like the 5.11 vests screaming shoot me first.
The only things screaming shoot me first are the people that aren't situationaly aware, and that carry without training to make sure they get the first shot of.

I haven't seen any stats, and it is a bit of difficult logic to decided:
If I was stupid enough to be a criminal, would I be smart enough to figure out who had a gun and still be stupid enough to go ahead and pull mine?
I more suspect that if they see someone with a gun they would just move on and victimize someone else, but who want to take the chance.
I'd probably be more worried about somone grabbing my gun and running off with it. If I were to open carry, I probably want a holster with a retention device.
