Will DL check by non-Texas LEO's show our CHL status?
My understanding of how a Driver's License check by a Texas LEO works is
that the CHL status shows up. This is a problem if the officer was not
presented with your CHL at the time of the traffic stop, and you are carrying.
To head off problems during the stop, even if you are not carrying, it would be
a common courtesy to the LEO to present both DL and CHL. He's going to find out
you're CHL anyway once he runs the DL.
My question is this: If you are travelling out of Texas, and are stopped by a LEO,
does the CHL status show up when he checks your Texas driver's license?
It would seem to me that if you are out of Texas, and simply present the DL, it
would eliminate the need to discuss your gun. The assumption being that an out of
state DL inquiry would not show the CHL.
Of course, many officers may simply ask question "Do you have any weapons in the
vehicle?" and then you should probably answer in the affirmative.
We should all check reciprocity in advance if travelling out of state, but the minutiae
of every state's carry laws might be hard to nail down.
The floor is open.

I'd present both if/when I travel out of state. And I'd darn sure know the gun laws of the state I'm traveling in, because you must abide by the laws of the state you are in. Knowing Texas laws doesn't help you if you are in Oklahoma or New Mexico traveling and carrying. And could get you into a heap of trouble if you are not knowledgeable of their gun laws.

It sure would facilitate travel if all states had this law: "have gun and CHL? (legally of course) - "carry" on!""joe817 wrote:Truer words have never been spake(I just coined a new word, lol), SIA!We should all check reciprocity in advance if travelling out of state, but the minutiae

It sure would! There was a National Reciprocity bill introduced into the U.S. Congress last summer. Unfortunately the bill was killed by a very narrow majority, 63-59 IIRC, or something close to that.

I'd show it. I do check other states laws before going, but must admit that I have not checked on whether or not I'm required to show my CHL. It sure would stink if one forgot to show it and that state was less forgiving that Texas' new law regarding failure to display.
Wasn't that national reciprocity thing mostly just for show? I seem to remember that even if it passed we still had to abide by whatever the laws were in whatever state we were in, which we do all ready. Am I remembering this correctly at all?

I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

It comes back as a TCIC Hit in TLETS when your DL is entered. It would come back the same way if the LE Agency is using a NLETS/State LETS program.

Re: Will DL check by non-Texas LEO's show our CHL status?
Personally, I tend to check the state laws and even jump on a state-specific CHL forum (if there is one) prior to traveling.
Researching my first trip into Oklahoma with a CHL gave me insights into how the signage differs from Texas and into other areas of interest. I would definitely present both the DL and CHL during a traffic stop in any state with known reciprocity. I might just avoid traveling through states without reciprocity, unless it cannot be helped. Just my 2 cents.

Sorry.... NCIC = National Criminal Information Center
TCIC = Texas " " "
NLETS = National Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (Computer based info)
TLETS = Texas " " " "
A hit is a notification sent via those two systems that would indicate that person in wanted or missing or some other "important" message pertaining to that person/vehicle

The initial question's answer still seems unclear to me -AFCop wrote:It comes back as a TCIC Hit in TLETS when your DL is entered. It would come back the same way if the LE Agency is using a NLETS/State LETS program.
Will a non-Texas LEO's inquiry about our TX DL show the CHL status or not?
I'm not trying to be obstreperous (set your dictionaries by your PC's now. :-))

Close AFCop, it stands for: National Crime Information Center
TCIC is Texas Crime Information Center.
For those curious about NCIC, some reading material on the link below.
http://www.fas.org/irp/agency/doj/fbi/is/ncic.htm
SIA, as far as I know CHL information is entered into TCIC only and would only be available to Texas agencies. But as others have stated it would be in your best interest to still provide your CHL to the LEO you are dealing with and be knowledgeable of the CHL laws in the state you are traveling within.
Honesty is the best policy.

Tajovo:
Thank you for the link. There's more text there than most of us could ever read!
Clarksburg, West Virginia 26306
The reason that this federal entity is there and not in DC is due to the political
pull that US Senator Robert Byrd has. He brings home the bacon to WV.
He's the oldest US Senator currently serving, IIRC.
