Colorado vacation

#1

Post by gus »

Going there this summer for a week. Any heads up that I need to know having a Texas CHL? Any advice where I should steer clear from? Anyone have any first hand expierance with it? Short of staying with family and a restaurant or two we will be fishing and sight seeing. Cruising parks, mountains, etc. Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Was just there for Spring Break. Generally speaking their laws are more advantageous to carrying than Texas (fewer restricted places). But check handgunlaw.us for details.

I had no problem carrying everywhere we went, including at the ski resorts.

Which way are you going?

Just curious.

If you're going Denver way, fastest is up through the OK panhandle.

If you're going to Durango area, fastest is up through NM.

If you're going for the scenic drive you do it all in one big loop.

We did that last summer.

OK laws are a little unusual, but you get through the panhandle pretty quickly. If you get stopped you must notify if you have a gun.

The patrol that stretch pretty heavily as it's wide open and it's easy to get tourists.

Have a good trip!

No OC sightings really? :evil2: Hmmm, I thought everybody wore a "big iron on their hip" in OC states. (ode to Marty Robins)

Please clarify:

Raton Pass is on I-25. Are you speaking of the NM highway between Clayton and Raton? I'm not trying to be picky because we expect to be traveling from Amarillo through CO Springs on our way to Montana on 3 May and may want to go another route if that ultra boring strech of road is snailsville.

@OG - yes referring specifically to the stretch of 64/87 between Raton and Clayton. I-25 on the pass itself was fine. So I guess if you want to see Raton Pass (which is beautiful) you could stick to I-40 and catch I-25 in Albuquerque. Out of the way, but better than doing 45 mph the whole way between Raton and Clayton like we did.

Other route we took on trip up there avoids Raton Pass altogether ... US 287 north from Amarillo through Dumas to Lamar, CO then US 50 over to I-25 in Pueblo. No problems at all on that route.

We are staying about an hour outside of Denver, never been there so don't really know where. Headed up there with the inlaws and they have been and know the area. We will fish and check out scenary, mountains and whatever. It is only a week long trip so we are flying to maximize time there. I have never flown since I became licensed to carry. Little nervous about that. Not sure what to expect or even how to go about it yet. We will finalize the carrier we will use tomorrow. Once we do that I will contact them and get the low down. My inlaws know I carry and I need to speak to my father in law about how he feels about it just out of respect to him. He is a good man and I am sure he will not have a problem with it. Speaking with my wife last night about how she felt about it and she piped up right away why I would even cosider not taking it! She likes the idea of me carrying and is a about to get her CHL as well. :patriot:

More off topic, especially since the OP is flying, bummer.

OldGringo,
If you REALLY want a nice scenic short cut around ABQ and Santa Fe, take 287 North from Clines Corners and you'll come out
at Glorieta Pass. Much more scenic 2 lane highway.

It doesn't avoid Raton pass though. That's hard to get around.

Thanks, but we'll cut across the SE corner of CO through La Junta and come out on I-25 in Pueblo. After visiting with Mrs. Oldgringo's 90 year old aunt in CO Springs, We'll be on our way up to our summer job as Camp Ground Hosts on Flathead Lake in Montana. By going early, I'm hoping we'll see some Griz and big cats in Yellowstone and Glacier.

I'll also keep my eyes peeled looking for citizens with an OC in CO, WY and MT. No one will see our CC's...I hope.

Hippies, keep a look out for hippies; especially, around Greeley, Ft. Collins and Denver.
