Good news for New Mexico

I was reading in the Amarillo Paper today and they said that the NM Senate voted to change the CHL laws to allow carrying a gun in a place that sells alcohol for off premise consumption. This is good news for us that live along the border with NM.

Can you copy the article or include a link. I would like to see the details.I'm planning a ski vacation in Taos this coming Christmas and it sure would be nice not to have to worry about carring into a shop that sold alcohol.

I found a good article here here
So far it is still only a bill. although passed by the senate by 26 -5 it still going to need the house vote and Governor signing.
Tired of having to ditch your gun for that quick dash into the grocery store?

Lawmakers have a solution for you.

The state Senate has voted to make it legal for New Mexicans who are licensed to carry concealed weapons to take them into stores that sell alcohol for off-premises consumption. That could include, for example, convenience stores or gas stations or big-box retailers.

It would remain illegal to take concealed handguns into bars or other places that served liquor.

The Senate voted 26-5 for the bill, sending it to the House.

Under current law, it's a fourth-degree felony to carry a concealed weapon into a store that sells packaged alcohol.

Concealed-carry licensees "don't want to be walking into a place and breaking the law," said Senate Republican Leader Stuart Ingle of Portales, who sponsored the legislation.

"Rather than having to take (the guns) off ... they'd rather just carry them in there," Ingle said.
And he argued it could prove safer, since guns could be stolen if they were left in vehicles when owners go into a store.

Supporters of the legislation also cited the August 2005 incident in an Albuquerque Wal-Mart in which a man with a concealed handgun fatally shot a man who was stabbing his ex-wife, who worked in the store.

Well, if it gets to the Governors desk he will probably sign it . I understand he is pro CCW and in fact has a License/permit. This would sure be good for NM CCW.

I hope you are right, but he is a Democrat and has friends within the anti organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, which was started by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Mennino.
At a summit meeting with this group one of the leaders, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy, was interviewed and asked about Obama bin Ladens presidential chances. I found his response disconcerting
Healy chose not muse about Obama's chances to win over Hudson County, or specifically Jersey City, voters in the presidential election.

"It would just be way too early to speculate on any of the candidates for president," said Healy. "He is certainly charismatic and he is a fresh face, so to speak, and I think he would be a great spokesman for our causes in Jersey City." But, he added, "So would Senator Clinton, John Edwards or [New Mexico Gov.] Bill Richardson."

I e-mailed a ccw instructor in NM and here is his reply

Hi Roger.

The NM legislature is still in session. No bills have been passed through both the House and Senate. My alcohol bills, SB 111 and HB 588 are still being heard. I suspect the member that posted that we passed an alcohol bill was confused with what he may have read in the paper or from some other source.

SB 111 has passed through both Senate Committees it was assigned to and has passed the Senate with a vote of 26-5. It will be reported out to the House and assigned to House Consumer and Public Affairs, House Business and Industry and then House Judiciary Committees for concurrence passage. In the meantime, we're paving the way for approval with the sister bill in the House - HB 588 - which is also being heard [first] in the same committees.
We passed House Consumer and Public Affairs Friday with a unanimous Do Pass on HB 588.

We do not anticipate any problems with passing this alcohol legislation this session. Once passed and signed into law by Gov Richardson, the law will become effective on July 1, 2007.

I have a Legislative Notices page on one of my web sites at http://www.handgunlaw.us You'll see a scrolling bar near the top of the page. Click on it and you can keep up to date with progress.

Funny how something like this can be taken out of context.

For the record - Gov Richardson is Pro-Gun. He is NOT part of any anti-firearms groups. I have worked with him since his election and he has supported every piece of firearms legislation we have introduced, gotten passed - the bulk of it passed only with his ramming some of it down legislator throats - then he has signed everything we have in the Statutes now. To imply anything else is a dis-service to someone that has done much for concealed carry. Gov Richardson holds NM CHL #1.

If you will re-read the quote you find disconcerting, you will see that Healy says those mentioned would be great spokesman for their causes. It does not say they are spokesman and it does not say they are even friendly to their causes. I would also point out that there is nothing to even begin to indicate he associates with those that speak his name. Saying someone would be good to have on your side is a far cry from actually having that person on your side.

I appreciate your skepticism of the firearms positions of a Democrat - especially a Clinton Administration Democrat. However, for all he may otherwise be - he is absolutely in our corner with our 2nd Amendment freedoms.

Hope you have a great day.
