Strange new Walmart ammo policy attributed to Open Carry

This policy makes perfect sense. If you were a bad guy intent on causing harm, once they've walked you past the carts and out both sets of electronic doors, how would you get back in?

Here is one for you. A couple of months ago I was at a local pawn shop picking up a shot gun someone had hocked. So I paid and presented my CHL and filled out an online 4473. So then the guy calls in a NICS check. Whatever... So I wait and he comes back and I tell the guy you know you dont have to do that when presented with a valid CHL right? He then says yes but its store policy. Again whatever... May I have my shotgun? Just a moment sir let me put this tiny little trigger lock on the shot gun so that you cant use it while in the store. I couldn't resist so I said your store is worried about me using this newly purchase shot gun to rob you? Yes sir. So I had to go one further.. I leaned over and said you probably aware that I am carrying a .45 right now right? He gave me a smile and I said right Store Policy...

I hope the shotgun was worth it.

I've bought ammo at Wal-Mart many many times usually only at our local (tomball) Wal-Mart. Ive only been escorted to the front once, and that was because the register for the ammo counter had been closed for the night (9:30 on a sunday). We got to the self checkout lines, the man gave me the ammo for me to scan and went on his way. Then he came back because he forgot to punch in my age for the register.
That situation is understandable though, I mean the firearms register was closed.

I buy a lot of ammo at Dallas WalMarts, and have never had this come up.

Exactly. I remember walking down a main street in my old town when I was 12 years old, carrying a .22 rifle, and nobody noticed or cared.

As pre-teens:
I can well remember my Older brother and myself either walking or riding our bikes, .22 rifles in hand. Would stop at the Gas Station to buy .22 shells (.50 cents for a box of 50). We would go down to the river to plink or out to the county dump (lots of cans and bottles).

It was common place and no one feared for their lives.

Later:
Able to have a rifle or shotgun ina gun rack in our trucks even in High School. Parking lot full of such. (Circa early '70's) Austin, Texas.

Times have certainly changed.

I bought some 9mm at the WalMart in McKinney last week. I wanted to grab a couple of boxes and join the wife who was grocery shopping but I either had to pay for it at the register there in Sporting Goods or she had to walk me to the register up front to pay for it. I paid for it in Sporting Goods and could have walked around the store with it but, instead, unescorted I walked it to the car and returned to join the wife.

I bought a hand gun at Academy in Frisco a few weeks ago and the Manager had to walk me to the register, waited until I paid for it, then walked me to the door.

I bought some 9mm at the Wal-mart in Garland, paid at the sporting goods counter. That was it, lady bagged it up, and I walked around the store with it.

Same here, purchased ammo at two different Walmart stores, paid for it in the department and continued shopping.
Not escorted anywhere.

I usually pick up a box or three of 9mm when I go to the store (Walmart in Gainesville). Always had to pay in sporting goods, but never experienced a problem/escort there...

Just bought a new pistol at Cabela's a few days ago. Other than them taking 1/2 hr. to get through the paperwork (It seems like they have to have everyone in the department double check every entry.) I was handed my new gun and continued to shop.

I know that Cabela's is not the best place to buy a handgun, but I was able to talk them down considerably on price and I had a $75 credit left over from Christmas.

I have bought ammo at Wal-Mart for years and have never been "walked out". Recently too.

As far as "walking out" a gun purchase-I very much doubt that this has much to do with keeping would be shooters from shooting up the store. It's like some electronic purchases, and etc., they are "walking you" to the customer service because they want to be sure you actually pay for the item.

I guess though, if you are being walked totally out of the store this would not apply. But I have worked for Wal-Mart for about 20 years off and on and never seen this nor heard of it happening.

By the way, I received my brand new CHL and did my walk-about in Wal-Mart and bought some ammo the other day!
