Debra Medina, Gubernatorial Candidate
One of the things we have been saying since the Legislature retired back in June, was that even though we lost several bills that were important to us, NOW is the time to start looking at the next Governor's race. The race is already on as I've heard some things from Kay Bailey and for the first time today I heard from Gubernatorial Candidate, Debra Medina.
I knew absolutely nothing about her until I listened in on the Wells Report on KLIF 570 AM in Dallas this afternoon.(I was hoping to hear something about the State Fair shenanigans that the gate people were doing to CHL holders, which is a HOT topic in the General CHL Discussion Forum. But that was not to be.) The Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize dominated the majority of the show. (yawn)
However, in the last hour or so Jon-David Wells had on as a guest Debra Medina, and interviewed her. Toward the end of the interview he opened up the call lines for questions only.
I was fairly impressed with her opening presentation, which include some political campaigning(more yawn), BUT when he opened up the phone lines, several callers called in questions regarding RKBA issues. Her answers blew me away.
She is STRONG pro 2A. One caller asked her: "Do you support open carry in the State of Texas". Her succinct answer was a definite Yes. No further discussion followed.
For now, she does have my interest. It's good to know that the candidates are openly expressing support of our 2A rights. I look forward to when the race is in full bloom to hear what they have to say about gun issues.

She's also for getting rid of property taxes.

She is also a politician trying to get elected.....I am not saying she doesn't believe in those things, but I am saying she is a politician trying to get elected!flb_78 wrote:She's also for getting rid of property taxes.

I'd be more interested to hear what programs she'll cut in order to pay for the property tax revocation.flb_78 wrote:She's also for getting rid of property taxes.

It maybe "Yes" today be it sure can be "Maybe" tomorrow.
What does the polls say?
I'd still go with the man who feels Texas is #1.
He's done great so far, why fix something that is not broken?

Re: Debra Medina, Gubernatorial Candidate
get rid of property tax and you get a huge increase in sales tax (with expansion into the goods/services that are taxable), possible a new VAT, or, God forbid, a state income tax. I agree there's just something wrong with property tax, but even "renters" pay property tax through their rent fees... the landlord sure isn't going to pay it (nor should he) out of his back pocket, as it's part of the cost of doing business. I am in a position (treasurer of our county Emergency Services District) that requires me to actually adopt a tax rate for the citizens of my county that helps fund our fire departments and first responders. Most of the tax paying citizens have no idea that nearly 60% of our tax revenues for all county services are from "minerals" (oil and gas, mainly). With the decline in volume of production, reduction of oil prices, and restrictive government policies, our local revenues will most likely be greatly reduces in the future. Couple that with a dramatic decrease in volunteerism (particularly volunteer fire departments) in the last 20 or so years, and we have the makings for a real problem. Not every part of Texas is a dependant on oil and gas as we are, so the mineral values aren't a big factor statewide. My thinkinig is to leave a lot of the solution to the local areas as to how best to manage their needs. There just isn't a "one size fits all" tax scheme that will benefit every locale.
I hope I didn't ramble too much. I've been needing to vent about my personal responsibilities regarding the tax base problem for a while. Sometimes I wish they would quit re-appoiniting me to the ESD board (by the way...our ESD board is comprised of non paid volunteers)
surv
p.s. It's just my opinion, but I have always believed that charity, beginning at home and the immdiate comunity level, would go a really long way to reducing the dependence on state and federal governments, but I'm afraid that we have reached the point in societal evolution of no return. Get ready for the mother of all mother sows to be born.

She was at the OpenCarry BBQ last weekend and I was told she'd replace property taxes with an additional sales tax.nitrogen wrote:I'd be more interested to hear what programs she'll cut in order to pay for the property tax revocation.flb_78 wrote:She's also for getting rid of property taxes.
While she was at the BBQ, she had a six-gun on her hip. I suspect that It was borrowed because both the pistol the holster looked brand new and unused. I was definitely a nice looking rig, but she would have been a lot more believable (in my eyes) if she'd shown up with a reasonable concealed carry piece that was simply not concealed during the event (like everyone else did).
I like her, but the Republican party is solidly behind Perry, so she's pretty much on her own. The likelihood of success in the election is pretty low.
Took class, paid fees, changed my mind. I want constitutional carry.

If she does loose regardless of to who, that would be the best time to see where she really stands on these controversial issues. See what she supports when she's not trying to sell herself.jsimmons wrote:She was at the OpenCarry BBQ last weekend and I was told she'd replace property taxes with an additional sales tax.nitrogen wrote:I'd be more interested to hear what programs she'll cut in order to pay for the property tax revocation.flb_78 wrote:She's also for getting rid of property taxes.

Re: Debra Medina, Gubernatorial Candidate
Read her website. She stands for everything most of us seem to believe in - more freedom, less government, personal accountability,
I intend to vote for her in the primary. I don't think she can win, but I sure do want to send a message about what I am looking for from my governor. If enough of us do that, perhaps the winner will take notice.

+1 As I recall, Perry didn't exactly come clean with all his intentions last election, (TTC, etc.) and Kay Bailout sure isn't trumpeting her own lack of conservative values right now either.Kevinf2349 wrote:She is also a politician trying to get elected.....I am not saying she doesn't believe in those things, but I am saying she is a politician trying to get elected!flb_78 wrote:She's also for getting rid of property taxes.
As for the "one of the common people" claims, remember that just as many awful politicians started out in blue-collar jobs as good ones.

Re: Debra Medina, Gubernatorial Candidate
chabouk, thanks so much for posting. If any of the forum members are considering voting for her, you owe it to yourself to watch as many of those youtube clips as you can. I watched 3 or 4 and came out with a basic understanding of what she stands for.
I didn't realize she's running under the Libertarian Party ticket. I also didn't know she is advocating eliminating the Federal Reserve. She is, like others have said, in favor of eliminating property taxes. And the list goes on.
