Obama: Gun prices will go down and ammo prices will go up.
Here's an interesting article on the politics of guns and ammo prices. I agree with what the author says except for ammo prices. You might be surprised to find that Obama is lying about recalling our boys home. He's a bigger hawk than Bush. Because of this increased military demand for ammo, you might be surprised to find ammo prices continuing to go up for military calibers and calibers that use the same production equipment; 9mm, .380, .223, 50BMG, and 5.56mm. Obama has sent more troops to foreign lands than Bush. However, he's lied and said that this was just a temporary "surge". My liberal friends see through this lie are very disappointed in this. For our sakes in 2012, I hope that he ticks off more of his liberal supporters.

You're confusing me.
The all-volunteer military forces of the United States are putting their lives on the line in Afghanistan and Pakistan to prevent the establishment of terrorist bases from which attacks could be launched on the U.S., and we're supposed to worry about ammo prices?

It actually is a pretty well-written article. It was published 15 months ago and hasn't been proven wrong.

Re: Obama: Gun prices will go down and ammo prices will go u
That part is just simply not true. Stop and think about how many American troops went to Iraq and Afghanistan combined over the almost 9 years since October 7, 2001 when we first invaded Afghanistan, and our 2003 invasion of Iraq. Obama hasn't come close to sending near that number of troops. In fact, for the Afghanistan "surge," General McCrystal asked for 80,000 troops, and Obama approved less than half of that number. In the Iraq invasion, Bush committed 248,000 U.S. troops to the invasion effort. By 2006, more than 500,000 U.S. troops had done at least one tour in Iraq.drjoker wrote:Obama has sent more troops to foreign lands than Bush.
Here is a chart of U.S. troop commitments since the invasion of Afghanistan. Obama, has approximately doubled the previous year's troop strength in Afghanistan, but it is still doesn't equal all the troops sent there since the invasion. And of course, that increased is matched by Obama's draw-down of troops in Iraq, which nearly completely offsets the Afghanistan increase. So the math doesn't work, and you need to get those facts straight.

Re: Obama: Gun prices will go down and ammo prices will go u
Another thing... I point out that the article was published over a year ago, on March 5th, 2009. I was in Cabelas on Friday, and they literally had tables piled high with inexpensive .223, 7.62x39, and 9mm ammo. I forget the brand names, but I didn't buy any .223 because they were steel cased, and I'm fixing to reload a bunch of it myself today or tomorrow anyway. However, I have had no trouble buying brass cased .223 ammo for months now. I bought some Federal XM193 for $8.50 a box (42.5¢/round) a couple of weeks ago. So whatever predictions Rockwell made about ammo based on supply and demand seem to be playing out. The price is still up, but the supply is stable and as overal troop draw-downs continue (which is the truth about Obama's overall military strategy), supply will increase and prices will come down.
In fact, here is a WASHINGTON POST ARTICLE titled "U.S. 'secret war' expands globally as Special Operations forces take larger role." The article makes the point that Obama has significantly expanded the use of Special Operations forces all over the world, because these forces typically operate in secrecy, and they don't talk to the press about what they're doing. Consequently, this gives Obama a "useful tool" to accomplish military objectives, while shielding him from criticisms from his own party about sending troops overseas. Of course, what Obama is either ignoring or hasn't given due consideration, is that the people who are fighting against (and occasionally killing) American Special Forces operators are well aware that they are fighting Americans. Consequently, word of specific instances of Special Forces deployments will get into the media. Does Obama imagine that radical Muslims in Somalia don't have Internet access? Look for pictures and video footage of these clashes to begin appearing on the web. Obama is a cynic. He's assuming that he can trade a smaller number of Special Forces wounded and killed for a larger number of conventional forces wounded and killed, and that we won't find out about it.

I saw AR15 stripped lowers at the Fort Worth gun show a week ago selling for $90.00 at one booth. Granted, they weren't a high end manufacturer, but they were decent, serviceable lowers. This same vendor was selling them for nearly twice that a year ago, so it looks like that new equilibrium is taking shape. While I don't have precise estimates on costs, I do know that AR-15 lower receiver forgings can be purchased for $35 dollars and the finished product sold in 2005 for $90 dollars and now sells for $175–300 dollars. To me, this suggests that prices may have a long way to fall to a new equilibrium.

Of course big O hasn't sent more troops total than Bush overseas because big O hasn't spent 8 years in office like Bush. However, he did double the troops deployed over Bush's last days in office. You mentioned this, too. So, I'm glad you agree with me.The Annoyed Man wrote:Here is a chart of U.S. troop commitments since the invasion of Afghanistan. But, I digress. My point wasn't troop numbers. I was only trying to word my post in a manner to get more people to read an interesting article. Why? Because I used to think that ammo prices are up because of some great conspiracy. However, that may not be true. It is probably just supply & demand due to election politics and the war overseas. I'm not going to explain these market forces in my post (just read the article!).

Ammo prices ARE coming down . . . at Dicks they're advertising Remington UMC .223 for $6.98/20 . . . that works out to $349/1000, which is the cheapest I've seen a major US brand of reloadable ammo in quite a while.
