My wife makes the point that, at some point you HAVE to trust people. You will trust a teacher with the sheltering, feeding and training of your child but won't trust them with their protection (except as fodder)? If they are trustworthy enough to care for a child, they are trustworthy enough to train and arm.

The same with LEO's, if they are trustworthy enough to carry a firearm almost everywhere (secured areas of jails excepted), then why are they not trustworthy enough to carry when they fly. 9-11 may not have happened, or at least been greatly mitigated if the LEO's on board had been allowed to carry.

If a parent is trustworthy enough to have passed a background check, trained and be licensed to carry a firearm, then there is no place that they shouldn't be able to protect their loved ones.

When James Huberty opened up at the San Ysidro McDonalds nearly 30 years ago, it took San Diego SWAT 77 minutes to get there, get organized, and get a SWAT sniper to put a stop to it. Huberty killed 21 and wounded 19, with an Uzi, a pistol and a shotgun.

The scene is about a mile and a half north of the border and even in those days, traffic would make it hard to get down there quickly. I do not criticize SDPD for the response time. The first PD officer got there in about 7 minutes and was engaged in a gun battle upon arrival. The first SWAT officers arrived in 35 minutes, but the then SWAT commander, just retired SD Mayor Jerry Sanders, took longer and countermanded a shoot order until he arrived. Who's to say what could have been better if different.

Anyway, I have always wished, and still do, that a CHL holder was in the restaurant that day. That might have made all the difference in the world.

A suit was filed by survivors and next of kin against McDonalds and franchisees, but the case was dismissed on a motion for summary judgment, affirmed on appeal, that McDonald's or any other business has no duty of care to protect patrons from an unforeseeable assault by a murderous madman; and plaintiffs could not prove causation because the standard reasonable measures normally used by restaurants to deter criminals, like guards and closed-circuit television cameras, could not possibly have deterred the perpetrator (who did not care about his own survival). Lopez v. McDonald's Corp. 193 Cal.App.3rd 495 (1987)
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

Hopefully the chief was misquoted; if not what a silly thing to advocate. (I didnt watch the video)

In a situation with an armed intruder the teachers dont have a choice in whether to go "face to face" or not. Small as it may be, teachers will always better their chances throwing lead then chalk.

While on the subject. I have always argued that 911 would not have had near the casualties if just 10% of the plane passengers had been carrying; even considering that their bullets disabled the plane & it went down killing all aboard.

What I find interesting, people do not understand that almost all good people are good people all the time. Anti gun people somehow seem to think that if you have a gun, you change and you will do evil things.

Next time you are in Walmart or Target go by the housewares section. You will see hundreds of lethal knives just sitting there on the shelf for any one to come and pick up and mass murder.

Voluntary teacher or administrator CHL is the perfect solution to this problem. My only caveat would be the gun must be carried on the person not in a purse, backpack or briefcase.

I agree, the gun must be carried by the teacher, no if(s), and(s) or but(s). If it is off the CHL person, for any reason, it must be locked in a biometric handgun safe built into the wall.

It's a good thing he's not the Fire Chief or he would ban fire extinguishers in schools and put locks on the fire hose cabinets so they can only be used by paid professionals.

Love the comment.

Then I thought about it. Oh, most of that is locked up at high schools. In order to pull the fire alarm you have to pretty much destroy an expensive alarmed plastic cabinet that has been placed around the fire alarm pull station to prevent you from pulling it. (easily)

Yet he has no problem with teachers going up against someone with an assault rifle with pencils and erasers......
Honestly I don't think he expects that either. To quote Goldfinger, "No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die."
