Press asks White House about AWB (updated)

#1

Post by Revet »

Was just watching today's (4/9 2:30pm CT) White House press briefing on the only channel on which it was being shown (unfortunately that was MSNBC). Reporter Helen Thomas put press secretary Robert Gibbs on the spot with a direct question about whether or not the president would push a new "assault weapons" ban in light of the recent mass shootings (few of course were perpetrated using what the antis call an "assault weapon").

Gibbs started his answer with the usual expression of sympathy, but then MSNBC suddenly cut away to a commercial before he got to the matter. I checked all the cable news channels I get and couldn't find it elsewhere.

We all know we can't, or shouldn't, count on what Gibbs says--but I would like to have seen his reply. If anyone comes across the video on-line, please post a link.

UPDATE: I found a video. Gibbs said that Pres. Obama was looking at other strategies, such as hiring more police officers, instead of reinstating the ban on "assault weapons."

Below is a link to article about it on a political news web site I had not heard of. The writer agrees with the president that other approaches should be pursued, and added that none of the recent shootings involved an EBR:

I remain cautiously optimistic. I think Obama saw the handwriting on the wall with all the new gun purchases and fears a voter backlash resulting in loss of control in Congress.

Just my 2 cents.

I think it's pretty funny whenever any federal official talks about "hiring more police officers". That is entirely a state or local jurisdiction function, unless it's the Secret Service or something, which of course it's not. I remember Clinton giving some money to the states for "100,000 new police officers". The only problem was, they never got to hire anywhere near that number, and the money was only for a year or two, so who paid the bill? The states, of course.

It is not the time to get relaxed about the AWB, though let's not get the tinfoil hats on either. Keep up with your congressional reps and senators and let them know how you feel. When the people speak, and act, the federal government has to listen.

And let's remember all these things before the next election, and tell your friends. Isn't it time to stop electing Presidents for "history-making" reasons? I think our first affirmative action President is a sad reminder that competence should be paramount.

I question the IQ of the average voter that keeps putting these "people" back in office over and over again, that have been in Washington since they flunk out of high school 70 years ago. It is time for America to wake up and take back our country, and vote every last one of them out and put someone in there that has the guts to stand up to the wrong and speak the truth...say what you mean and mean what you say, stop the pork, enact turn limits, and no more collecting their salary and health insurance for the rest of their life. No more career politicians!!

Is there one?...that will enforce and defend the Constitution of the USA? :patriot:
