Re: Justice Steven's Retiring
I just saw that myself.
I'll BET they are scrambling to find a replacement....before the mid term elections, because they realize what they are up against with any delay.The timing of Stevens' announcement leaves ample time for the White House to settle on a successor and for Senate Democrats, who control a 59-vote majority, to conduct confirmation hearings and a vote before the court's next term begins in October.

Re: Justice Stevens Retiring
The top two contenders are apparently, in order, Diane Wood and Elena Kagan.
Wood is a judge on the 7th Circuit Court in Chicago. She is viewed as a hard-left liberal and I would imagine, being from Chicago, would lean anti-2A. She was on faculty at Chicago Law School where Obama taught Constitutional Law (I know, ironic isn't it?).
Kagan is former Dean of Harvard Law School but has never been a judge and therefore has no trail of judicial opinions. She's considered a moderate because she apparently was able to "reach out to conservatives" while Dean at Harvard. She is currently serving as US Solicitor General.
Janet Napalitano is apparently also in the running.

Re: Justice Stevens Retiring
The ONLY good thing about Stevens is the certainty that he wouldn't be on the bench for much longer.
The problem with any Obama replacement is that we can look forward to DECADES of anti-Americanism from that seat; creative misinterpretation, "auras" and "penumbras" of meaning, cites of foreign law being applied to US decisions . . .
I wonder if a President McCain would have filled SCOTUS vacancies better than BHO would . . . an whether or not the GOP members of the Senate will muster the intestinal fortitude to stop the really, really bad nominee we can expect . . .

Apologies for my political ignorance but is this good or bad for us that he is leaving?
Re: Justice Stevens Retiring
Depends on who "us" is. I think it's a wash for gun owners. He dissented in Heller, along with Darth Vader Ginsberg, showing he doesn't understand that the purpose of the Bill of Rights was to limit the powers of the government when he wrote, "The Court would have us believe that over 200 years ago, the Framers made a choice to limit the tools available to elected officials... I could not possibly conclude that the Framers made such a choice."rm9792 wrote:Apologies for my political ignorance but is this good or bad for us that he is leaving?
However, Barry is likely to nominate someone equally antagonistic to basic human rights.

I dunno.... it is an exchange of one libtard for another. The down side is that Odumbell takes the definition of libtard to a whole new level. I suppose it depends on how one perceives going from a liberal to a Socialist. Anyone think the timing of this is more than just chance? Somebody wanted to make this appointment while the Socialists controlled the Senate.rm9792 wrote:Apologies for my political ignorance but is this good or bad for us that he is leaving?

Whats Anti-Americanism? Examples?
Justice Stevens was a strange one, was against Flag Burning but for Freedom of Speech/expression, brought WW2 alot (He was a vet), he was appointed by a Republican, appointed because he was "Not Politically affiliated", and kinda wandered on where he stood on issues. Pro-Death penalty, But sadly will be painted as a "Socialist" or a Liberal because of his dissenting view on Bush v Gore.

Quote from David Barton, but since I couldn't say it better I'll just paste his words:marksiwel wrote:Not to derail too much butHankB wrote:The ONLY good thing about Stevens is the certainty that he wouldn't be on the bench for much longer.

I do not share Obama's vision or value system for
America ;
- I do not share his Abortion beliefs;
- I do not share his radical Marxist's concept of
re-distributing wealth;
- I do not share his stated views on raising taxes
on those who make $150,000+
(the ceiling has been changed three times since
August);
- I do not share his view that America is
Arrogant;
- I do not share his view that America is not a
Christian Nation;
- I do not share his view that the military should
be reduced by 25%;
- I do not share his view of amnesty and giving
more to foreigners than our American Citizens who
need help;
- I do not share his views that Radical Islam is
our friend and Israel is our enemy who should give
up any land;
- I do not share his spiritual beliefs (at least
the ones he has made public);
- I do not share his beliefs on how to re-work the
health-care system in America ;
- I do not share his Strategic views of the Middle
East; and
- I certainly do not share his plan to sit down with
terrorist regimes such as Iran .
Bottom line: my America is vastly different from Obama's,
and I have a higher obligation to my Country and my GOD
to do what is Right!

Re: Justice Stevens Retiring
From reading your past posts, I know that you and I are 180 degrees apart politically. Please elaborate on the points in the above quote that you feel are incorrect. Reducing our military, entering into a nuclear disarmament treaty and promising not to retaliate if biological weapons are used against us? His stand on abortion? Raising taxes? The redistribution of wealth? Apologizing for some perceived American arrogance? Kissing up to his muslim breathren? Dissing Israel? Saying this nation was not founded on Christian principles? I'm trying to avoid bringing up that massive albatross of a Health Bill he crammed down our throats, and no, something is not better than nothing....the Health Bill is proof.marksiwel wrote:There are just so much wrong, misleading, and incorrect statements in that quote, I dont even know where to begin.
