Pretty good article. This guy's comment "bugs me":
Frankie Shulkin, a first-year law student at the University of Texas, said he doesn't think he'd feel safer if other students in his classes had guns.

"If I was taking an exam and knew the person next to me had one, I don't know how comfortable I would feel," Shulkin said. "I am in favor of guns rights and your typical conservative guy, but the classroom thing bugs me."

I know ... it's the I'd be nervous if ..."and knew the person next to me had one" fallacy.

Police don't know I'm armed unless they ask. I've had them stare at me trying to see if I am or not while in gun stores, else maybe they just stare cause I look funny .... :biggrinjester:

Would he be bothered if he wasn't taking an exam? Maybe it's the exam rather than the gun that is his source of angst?

How does he feel about the student next to him having a necklace with a cross or a Jewish star? What if she's wearing a hijab?

what i would like to know is; if the person is truly carry concealed like your supposed to. how would they know the person sitting next to them has a gun?

:iagree: EXACTLY.

They live in fear that everyone is armed. It's that irrational fear.

Actually, since that's an API press release, it also is "EVERYWHERE"
FOX
CBS
ABC
NBC
all newspapers
everywhere

Just Google "Texas poised to allow guns on campus"

It's on TV in ... Idaho.

But award for the most prejudicial, anti-Texan, out of context photos accompanying the article goes to .... npr and San Francisco Chronicle and of course, the huffing too much post

But since the person next to him, if carrying, is carrying concealed, he wouldn't know that he was carrying or not.

That's the point of allowing concealed carry on campus. Any active shooter won't know who's carrying or not and hopefully will be deterred. Or if not deterred and starts shooting, someone has a chance to stop the threat as soon as possible.

Why did I do it, why did I do it? That is, why did I go and read ANY of the comments on the article listed on Huffington Post? I really wanted to tell some of those smug nut-jobs that if they are that afraid of this state and law-abiding Texans carrying firearms, to stay wherever it is they are, we DON'T NEED THEM...and if some of those people live here and are that afraid of a handful of folks with CHLs being able to carry on campus, well the high tax, liberal progressive "paradises" of California, Massachusetts and New York beckon...when they go, there will be several more, for each of them, in line wanting to move here. I LOVE my state!

Strange how they are so Scared of CHL on campus.
Yet they trot right into malls, movies, big box stores, etc., etc.. with not even a blink or care.

TX has roughly 2 % CHL so in theory, about 1 in 50 people, off campus and right next to them, IS armed!

Some guy was "going off" about Perry firing a gun into the air and how all bullets come down somewhere and how he shouldn't aim it up in the air ...

I responded "Did you read the caption? Where do you guys aim your "blank-firing-starters pistols?"

Those people have opinions without knowledge.

If anyone noticed from 2000 to 2010 TX added some new 4.5 million Texans, we have a low tax burden, low cost of housing, low cost of living and very spacious state. What about Illinois, NY and Gold State, KA? Is it golden there?

I was debating this very topic on another board where the "antis" were expressing the same fears. I used Census & DPS data to post this rebuttal:
Interesting....of 400,000+ Texas CHL holders in 2009, 101 were convicted of various crimes. 25 per 100,000.

72% of Texas' total population is 18 years of age and over - roughly 18,000,000 souls. There were 65,000 criminal convictions in 2009. That's about 360 convictions per 100,000. If my math is right.

25/100,000 is significantly less than 360/100,000 by anyone's standards.

Could we then say that an innocent person would be 14 times more likely to be a victim of a crime from the general adult population than they would be from a CHL holder?

Couldn't find the 21 & over age breakdown, so that could be off by a few percentage points.

Sounds like CHLs are a much more law-abiding group to me than the general population.

Seriously though, I ain't a stat guy & am not sure how that works, so would somebody please correct me if this is all bull?
