Gun-related posts to Facebook
I see a lot of posts under the NRA Facebook topics that are of a very threatening nature. Friends, remind others there that some of those posts will be used as examples that the country needs to squash the Second Amendment to "protect the people from those crazies." Let us NOT be our own worst enemy, okay? Thanks for listening.

Gun owners have enough to deal with all the bad press and we dont need to make it worse. I would also add that it has been my experience with the gun groupies I hang out with are a pretty good and well mannered bunch.

A thing to remember about Facebook and other forum/blog sites is that trolls are rampant. I have found them on open Facebook groups, newspaper and television comment threads, etc. We watch this site VERY closely for any trolling and squash them ASAP.
So, just like anything you get or see on the Internet, take it with a grain of salt unless you know and trust the source.

Re: Gun-related posts to Facebook
I have a rule about guns and facebook--they don't mix. Causes too much drama and danger. I think most of my friends are decent people, but some I have not seen since highschool so I don't trust them with the knowledge of what I do and do not do about guns. A place like this is a little different. Just about everyone here at least likes firearms (or understands their usage), and most people on this board own at least one. So this group has a little more leeway in knowing what I do and do not have around my house.

Funny you mention this. Went to my wife's 30 year reunion a couple of weeks ago. We both graduated from the same small-town high school, so I know a lot of her friends in her class.mamabearCali wrote:I have a rule about guns and facebook--they don't mix. While there, I was talking to one of the ladies from her class that is a nurse. She casually mentioned the fact that she frequently had to walk to the car late at night and needed a way to protect herself. A little more discussion and she made the comment she had taken a CHL class. We kind of moved off to the side from the others and she told me she had taken the class about a week earlier (I know her instructor there in our hometown/state) and she had gone and gotten a S&W 642.

We talked for about another 20 minutes and I gave her some pointers on things to watch for and tips on situational awareness and she advised that her instructor had mentioned these things too, but the reenforcement helped set them in her mind.
Toward the end of the conversation she asked how often I carried. I told her that I carried as often as I was allowed to by law/work. She then said 'Well, since you are in slacks and a polo shirt, you must not be carrying now.' I casually turned my back to her where only she could see, pulled my polo shirt tight at the waist at 4 o'clock and said 'Glock 26 in a Crossbreed holster'. Her eyes got pretty big and said, 'OK, I have to go get Kevin (her husband) and you HAVE to convince him he needs to get his CHL if you can hide it that well!!' Kevin was always a hunter, so I knew there was no issue about guns, just needed to prompt him a little. That lead to another 20 minutes of talk and discussion and I understand he signed up for class the following week.
Bottom line, I normally enjoy class reunions, but for some reason this one was the best one ever!!!!!!

Re: Gun-related posts to Facebook
I just gave up on posting anything firearm related on my Facebook and I purged all firearm related photos and information off my profile. It's too much of a liability. It seems I can only talk about firearms in front of other firearm owners. There is such a negative connotation about firearms and firearm ownership with some people. Primarily through misinformation and lack of familiarity. I've even met a few people that are absolutely terrified about firearms, one so much he can not even be in the same room with one (good thing he doesn't realized I have a CHL). I find this such a shame because marksmanship and familiarity with firearms are important things to know.

Re: Gun-related posts to Facebook
When I first started my research and quest to purchase a firearm to be used for concealment purposes I posted a few comments about it on my Facebook naively thinking it would be ok. One of my CHL carrying friends did the Facebook equivalent of pulling me aside by sending me a private message asking if I really wanted people to know about that sort of business. Especially since some of the folks who employ me at various times are on my friendslist. I concluded he had a point and I went back and erased all those messages. However, one guy I know still talks to me about it because he doesn't think it should matter if stuff like that is discussed openly. Arghhhhh, I'm gonna have to explain to him...again, that if he wants to know if I am goin to the Gun Show he should either call me or message me. Not ask me openly.

Re: Gun-related posts to Facebook
I very rarely comment politically on FB. I have some friends, people I actually like, that often post left leaning dribble. I just shake my head and look past it. We have discussed before that anything posted on the internet is forever. Prospective employers and clients will typically check FaceBook as a first step in screening. I minimize my groups' and causes' membership for the same reason.

Sometimes I wonder if those kind of posts aren't plants by the Brady-bunch for that very reason.Eddie wrote:I see a lot of posts under the NRA Facebook topics that are of a very threatening nature. Re: Gun-related posts to Facebook
This is a good topic of discussion. I try to be very careful about what I post on any website including gun forums. Anything I say can be used against me and can be used out of context. I have a facebook account but I rarely post on it. Many of my contacts are anti-gun people...I guess I have not used the "ignore" button enough

Maybe it's a sign of the times, even though it seems the times - at times- are more pro 2A. I dunno.
If I have to worry about some friggin FB posts that I make...
Why should I have to worry about a post any more than an anti ?
It pisses me off.

Re: Gun-related posts to Facebook
I created a separate list of friends that are pro gun. Any gun related posts I make are visible to them only.
I learned this lesson after one of my family members went on a crazy anti diatribe on one of my posts.

Re: Gun-related posts to Facebook
I dip into politics on Facebook quite often. I'll post my opinions and then drag the opposition down with their own words. Most people who argue with emotions will contradict themselves in the same post. I can egg them on with questions until they know they've lost which usually results in them deleting their contradictory posts, threatening physical violence, or assuming the "high road" and not arguing with "this idiot" anymore.
The first response gets a screenshot posted, the second also gets a screenshot with a reminder that nerds rule the world now, and that's evidence of threatening violence in a court of law, and the third gets this link: http://tinyurl.com/3nsvq9y.

Same here and for the same reasons, although I have "taken the bait" and replied to a few relatives' FB statuses.Dragonfighter wrote:I very rarely comment politically on FB. I do have one liberal friend that I'll argue with (in the intellectual sense; we're not mad at each other), but at work it's, "You're wrong", "No I'm not", "Yes you are", back and forth until one of us can't keep a straight face.
