That goes back to the Civil War. There was a story of some Wisconsin soldiers taking exception to being called Yankees with the retort similar to that of "We are NOT Yankees... we're Western men!"

It's my understanding, Yankees are from states that comprised the original 13 colonies.

However, most Southerners consider anyone from north of the Mason-Dixon line a Yankee.

And, of course, fur-nerrs considers all of us Yankees...

If you're from outside the United States, any American citizen is a "yankee."

If you're from the US, west of the Mississippi, anyone east of the Mississippi is a "yankee."

If you're from east of the Mississippi, and south of the Mason-Dixon line, anyone east of the Mississippi and north of the M-D line is a "yankee."

If you're from east of the Mississippi, and north of the Mason-Dixon line, anyone from New England is a "yankee."

If you're from New England, you take offense at being called a "yankee," point to NYC, call -them- "yankees" (and a few other choice words), then angrily declare that New York is NOT part of New England!

And then there are those of us who think anyone from north of San Antonio is a Yankee!

That's a new one for me. So, people from New Orleans, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia are Yankees?
Not sure what people west of the Mississippi you know that think that way, but da some ignorant folk.

In New England a person is a "Yankee" if they come from a long line of ENGLISH settlers.
No other ethnic groups fit the term "Yankee" with such a description.

A Massachusetts/Pennsylvania friend of mine used to fly for Continental Airlines out of Houston.

One of his Houston co-workers told him that anyone north of Interstate 10 is a Yankee!
That includes quite a lot of Texas!! :-)

In my brief 41yrs on this earth, I've lived north of I-10 a grand total of a year and a half. So I'm OK with this one. As a matter of fact, I routinely kid my cousin by calling him a Yankee as he lives in Corsicana. :biggrinjester:

Folks In parking lot the Carolina's and Georgia would have a problem with the 13 colonies thing.
