my son is 18 and moved to an apartment. can i give him one of my handguns?

I'm not a lawyer but you can gift your son a handgun and he can legally possess it at 18. He's just not allowed to conceal it.

Actually, he can conceal it in his home, and he can carry it in his vehicle and it must be concealed. He just can't get a concealed carry license until he is 21 unless he is current or former military.

I've taught him to respect and use firearms since he was small. starting out with bb guns, pellet guns and 22s. He's handled shotguns a rifles and is a pretty good shot. It's a scary question because I don't want to get either one of us in trouble. I looked at texas laws and thought he could have a handgun, but wanted to check the consensus here - there seems to be a lot of knowledgeable on this site.

i'll make sure he understands the consequences and his responsibility before handing over any weapons.

Make sure you give him ammo, too, because he won't be able to buy pistol ammo. He is good to go if you gift him the pistol. He can conceal it in his home and have it in his vehicle, as long as he is following all laws and staying out of gun free school zones, etc. (and I assume he is not living on a college campus.)

It's awesome to see people sending their children into the world armed. We need a whole lot more of this going on.

Before my daughter moved into her first apartment she brought her two new roommates out for a mandatory relaxing day of barbequing, firearms safety, training, awareness, shooting and cleaning her revolver. I knew both of these girls and while neither one of them ever shot a gun before they both picked it up pretty quickly and enjoyed shooting.
My sons not so much. Their close friends hunted and grew up with guns in their closets as they did.

Yes, that was going to be my point as well as keeping the weapon from easy access by visitors.

Possibly also gift him or he can get a small safe that can be bolted to something to keep it in when he's not home.
