Both signs at McKinney Half Price Books

#1

Post by Dreamer42 »

I read somewhere that area HPB stores were now posted. After eating lunch with the family I stopped by their store on I-75 and saw they had both 30-06 and 30-07 signs in the window. Before there had been no signs. I disarmed, went in and calmly introduced myself and explained my dissatisfaction. I shared that my family shopped there often, but that would end as of today unless the signs were removed. Oddly enough, the manager agreed, even saying she, too had her CHL. She even grinned as if in frustration when I then explained all those two signs do is create an environment that criminals will not obey. I asked her to pass it on to corporate. Doubt that will happen. But if you don't say something they'll never know. Do you think a letter will do any good? :headscratch

The one in Richardson on 75 and Belt Line only had 30.06 up this morning when I went by. I had heard they were putting signs up and we were eating breakfast right next door so figured I would look. Don't know if they just hadn't gotten around to the 30.07 yet or what. Told my girlfriend it's odd to put a 30.06 up and not a 30.07. They've definitely lost my business.

I and my wife are planning on calling tomorrow when their customer service line opens. Never hurts to try.

The posting of a NEW 30.06 seems unusual, since (to my knowledge) HPB stores have never been 30.06 before, but in the big scheme of things, I can see why they'd handle it that way.

My take on it is that they are going 30.06, since if I'm concealed, you'd never know it, and as such, you'd never have the occasion to directly notify me otherwise. If I'm carrying openly, and you notice it, you mention it to me, and I now have effective notice. Not the approach I'd take, but then again, I'm desensitized to it (as are most of us on this forum.)

It's the first confirmed report (I've seen) of standalone 30.06 going up in response to open carry, but we may see more of it in the near future. Hopefully it will go away quietly once the streets remain paved with asphalt rather than blood for a while.

My local stores are posted with both signs as well (Mansfield and Burleson). I wrote Corporate a polite letter noting I had often carried into their stores concealed without any problem but now I will be forced to go elsewhere. I asked them to please reconsider the sign against concealed carry. Hopefully, they will get a large number of those polite letters to read and reconsider the number of customers they may lose.

I saw on another forum that someone wrote them an email and received a reply that corporate policy is no guns for customers or employees for their safety etc etc
so i'm assuming all stores are going to be posted if they arent already

A letter directly to corporate wouldn't hurt. In that letter, I'd mention the fact that for 20yrs of Texas concealed carry they haven't had an issue with CHL holders. The beginning of open carry in Texas won't suddenly change that.

I did the same, wrote corporate a polite letter on Saturday. Like the poster above me said, I also pointed out that HPB has allowed concealed carry for 20 years without incident. Possibly hundreds of thousands of armed visitors in their Texas stores during that time, all paying good money. I suggest everyone that shopped there do the same.

It's really as shame. My wife and spent money there several times a month since we moved to Texas 3 years ago. Looks like we'll be going to Barnes & Noble across the street, or turning to online shopping.

Stopped by one over the holidays and bought some books.....they weren't posted at the time. That will be my last time in HPB. I guess it's Amazon from now on.

In another thread I mentioned in passing how HPB used to be posted here in Ohio (pretty much since CCW became legal in 2004 I think). In the last two years all the signs have come DOWN, so it's very odd that they would suddenly start posting in other states. I don't have one near me so I've not been back recently to see if they've reposted, but I expect that some of the usual suspects over on ohioccwforums.org would be rousing their rabbles if signs were reappearing.

On the other hand, Fridays and Applebees both posted as soon as it would have been legal to carry into their establishments, i.e. when bar carry passed, so I'm not surprised to hear of the same shenanigans in Texas.

I asked them also on their contact form.

I asked...
"I just saw that you are now posting 30.07 AND 30.06 signs on at least some of your Texas locations to forbid firearms. While I understand the 30.07 open carry signs to prevent distraction, the 30.06 will prevent me and the majority of the CHL community from patronizing your stores. I have purchased many books and music items in the past, but will not enter an establishment that will make me disarm to shop there. You are certainly within your legal rights, but I have not had to disarm coming in before, and you never noticed. This is the same as all of the other CHL customers. We follow the law, and will just not enter if the 30.06 is posted. These 30.06 signs do nothing to prevent people that wish to do harm while preventing law abiding people from entering. Thank you for your time,"

Received the following response...
"Thank you for your email. Half Price Books has had a long-standing policy making all of our stores and facilities weapons-free. This policy will not change in 2016, though we are now posting signs in our Texas stores that are compliant with the relative statutes starting on January 1st.

We respect customer opinions even if they differ with our own. However, it is the policy from our corporate offices, to our warehouses, and to our stores that weapons are not allowed on the premises. We decided to do this for the comfort and safety of our employees and customers.

Again, thank you for contacting us."

So I responded with this, but do not expect to hear back...
"Thank you for your response. You are certainly well within your rights as a private company to have any policies you wish. I along with all other CHL holders will respect that decision. Those that wish to do harm won’t care about your policy though. All of the mass shootings have happened in gun free zones and I will have to abstain from frequenting any business that asks me to allow myself to be a victim. I will be back if the concealed signs come down."

Some years ago after transferring depts. and finally leaving LE later on we used to eat at Denny's a lot both on duty and off with family. When the CHL was implemented Denny's posted the 06 signs.
Prior to leaving the Sheriff's Office we ate there and were welcomed, after the 06 signs went up and leaving the Dept over night I was not welcome, I called Denny's and had 2 discussions on this, they could not answer me as to why they did that with a real answer, after the 2nd conversation I GOT A CALL from Denny's to return was the voice mail message, all 06 signs were removed.
I hope the outcome will be like that again.
