This case is part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s signature initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. Initiated by the Attorney General in the fall of 2019, Project Guardian draws upon the Department’s past successful programs to reduce gun violence; enhances coordination of federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes; improves information-sharing by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives when a prohibited individual attempts to purchase a firearm and is denied by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), to include taking appropriate actions when a prospective purchaser is denied by the NICS for mental health reasons; and ensures that federal resources are directed at the criminals posing the greatest threat to our communities.

You mean people actually believe, that by enforcing gun laws, already on the books, it might actually prevent prohibited persons from obtaining guns? What a novel idea!! I wonder why no one has thought of this before?

I would have been very, very happy if it was the denial via NICS that had kicked off the investigation but I am still very, very glad to Mom took action.

It is exciting to me to finally see some enforcement of the laws already on the books.

While I like the Project Guardian idea and I am glad to see someone followed up on the complaint and false information, there is a problem with claiming this is part of the project. The crime occurred in late 2017 and early 2018. The mother's complaint came in March 2018. For the conviction to have come in December then the charges must have been filed and the indictment returned quite a while earlier. The federal justice system is not a fast-acting system. Since Project Guardian started in the fall of 2019, this case must have been actually started earlier than being part of the project would allow.
