The Judge in action...
This post: Bird shot + Judge = boo-boo
is by an police officer in the Indianapolis area. Seems he investigated a shooting that involved a Taurus Judge loaded with bird shot. Sounds like it was not an intentional shooting. I find his observations about the resulting wound interesting, but not surprising.
I never could figure out the appeal of the Judge - it appears to me to be awfully large and bulky for the ammo that it carries, and putting birdshot in it would seem to cripple it mightily...unless you are going CQB with birds or butterflies.

Bu, but it blew doors open in Max Payne. Surely it will do that in real life...ELB wrote: I never could figure out the appeal of the Judge - it appears to me to be awfully large and bulky for the ammo that it carries, and putting birdshot in it would seem to cripple it mightily...unless you are going CQB with birds or butterflies.

It's for snakes. The 45LC will work for anything else.
Re: The Judge in action...
My friend bought two for Rattlers at his ranch. After patterning them, he offered to give me one. They were worthless. He now uses .45ACP with CCI rat shot.rotor wrote:It's for snakes. The 45LC will work for anything else.

Re: The Judge in action...
An acquaintance bought one for his wife as a bedside gun. But not for it's ability to wound. She did not feel like she could ever shoot another person. But they both wanted to have mechanisms in place to protect the kids. Their final conclusion was, if a known intruder was downstairs, for her to put two shots of .410 through the master bedroom window that faced the street. The second shot would very likely attract attention from the neighbors without sending 'boo-lettes' downrange. And would almost certainly make any bad guys be looking desperately for a way out of the house. She would then use bear spray for anything else that followed after that.ELB wrote: I never could figure out the appeal of the Judge - it appears to me to be awfully large and bulky for the ammo that it carries, and putting birdshot in it would seem to cripple it mightily...unless you are going CQB with birds or butterflies.
Perfect? Not even close. Better than nothing, or better than just screaming? I think so. IMO, far to many people ask what gun they should buy, or what gun they should buy their spouse. Far too few sit down without the testosterone running and ask themselves or their spouse if they are really, really willing to end another's life. Some quite honestly aren't. Better to deal with that honestly as best as you can, rather than making plans that will never be used. Yeah, yeah, I know the lingo. I know the arguments. More bullets. More training. Do it for the kids. I get that. My choices would be different than theirs. But, I kind of liked their approach and her honesty.
edited to add "master bedroom 'window'" Not the implied master bedroom wall as it originally read.

I can't believe anyone would reasonable plan to shoot through walls.. Maybe you had to be there.
Re: The Judge in action...
I own a S&W Governor ( 410, 45ACP, 45LC) which I bought to carry on the ranch and is my open carry piece in the fields (which confirms that I will not OC in public). I tried the 410 just to see how it shot if I did see a snake and didn't have hearing protection. I was deaf for almost 2 days. If I do see a snake I will throw the gun at him. I would not want to fire that 410 in the house. Might never hear anything again. Don't know about 45 bird shot. Have not fired the 45 ACP or 45LC without hearing protection.MONGOOSE wrote:My friend bought two for Rattlers at his ranch. After patterning them, he offered to give me one. They were worthless. I missed typed and omitted "Window." They have a large picture window that faces the street. Still might not be perfect but a slightly better mental image that trying to pierce an external wall with a .410 pistol. Sorry about that. I'll edit the post.tlt wrote:I can't believe anyone would reasonable plan to shoot through walls.. Maybe you had to be there.

Re: The Judge in action...
I still bust out laughing when I see one of these things.
All because of the gun store sales guy who tried to sell me one with the most amazing claims as to its power.
I must have looked real stupid to him.

You may have the last word.

My stepdad has one, and keeps .410 slugs in it. I think he just liked the idea of a shotgun pistol. I don't think he has even shot it. I know I haven't.

Is her name "Biden" by odd coincidence?
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

Re: The Judge in action...
I would have serious doubts about the through the window plan. One doubt would be that the neighbors would even hear the second shot. Better off throwing a rock through the window followed by a string Of Firecrackers. Even then I doubt we get police first bonds faster than just dialing 911

Re: The Judge in action...
I use the Judge loaded with bird shot for a single purpose: shooting poisonous snakes that come up around the house or my dogs. Big as it is it fits easily in my pocket and is far more effective on a snake than .38 special snake shot, which lately is hard to come by (and snake shot doesn't cycle a semi-auto).ELB wrote:This post: Bird shot + Judge = boo-boo

Really, I've found it very effective against snakes. What distance was he patterning? I'm shooting snakes within 5 to 10 feet.MONGOOSE wrote:My friend bought two for Rattlers at his ranch.
