Ruger LCP $250 at Academy

#1

Post by Unocat »

The Ruger LCP is a great deep carry pistol. I carry one in either a crossbreed OWB, 5.11 tactical shirt, Sneaky Pete, or even just my pocket.
$250 is a really good price.

yes, they were $220(before tax), at the show in Lewisville this weekend. For the base one.
I have an LCP custom ( red trigger, real sights), but haven't decided if I want to buy another caliber, or just stick with 9mm, but for size, slimness, build quality, reliability and price, can't go wrong with a base LCP.

I carry one as my backup or when wardrobe simply prohibits anything else. Reliable, pretty darn accurate, and obviously VERY concealable. I'd recommend it as one to carry exactly as described.

Very tempting. I think that I've been needing a pocket gun. Is there anything else in this size that's better? My friend loves his, and the price seems really nice.

I have an LCP and I used to carry it in my right pocket. It's a reliable little gun - not much fun to shoot, however. It's pretty snappy and not comfortable in the hand after a few rounds fired. Not something you would want to spend a day at the range shooting. I stopped carrying it when I moved up to the Ruger LC9S. I do love that gun. I'm not comfortable with the .380 round as a self defense caliber. I've not bought any .380 lately, but there was a time when it was rather expensive and hard to find. I now carry the LC9S almost exclusively in a Bladetech appendix holster.

I've never shot anything in this category (micro .380s), so I'll let somebody else chime in with first hand opinions. Since seeing this posted, I've watched a half dozen reviews online, so below is a general summary of what I'm seeing consistently.

The recent comparisons seem to always focus on the Sig P238 (2-3x the price, but much better sights and trigger) and the Glock 42. Some might offer the Kel-Tec, but I haven't watched reviews with it.

The general consensus is that the Ruger is fine for the price, but requires much practice because the trigger has a lot of travel and an unnaturally long reset. Also, in the tests I've seen, the slide does not lock back after the magazine is empty. I thought one reviewer was wise when he said (paraphrasing), "It's a fine gun, but it's not for the shooter who will usually end up with it. It's not for inexperienced shooters.".

When considering price and weight, it's always in the conversation for these micro-guns.

Before buying anything in this category, I'd want to convince myself that the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield in 9mm or .40 really is too big / heavy for the applications being used (deep conceal, pocket gun, etc.) and that I need to step down to one of these.

I agree with fickman... a lot of people buy these because they are inexpensive. Then they shoot them once or twice and sell them for cheap! The common complaints are bad sights, long trigger, and snappy recoil. However, these aren't competition pistols. They are made to be shot a little and carried a lot. Deep conceal pistol for up close use.. more point than aim.

Some folks will advise you to step up to the 9mm in a very similar size package... well, guess what... most of those little 9mm also have bad sights, long trigger, and even snappier recoil. I know this is the case with my Keltec PF-9. Sights are ok, but pull the trigger on Sunday and it breaks and fires on Friday. And it has some snappy recoil due to not having a lot of weight. The sharp edges on the grip can be painful when shooting. I covered mine with a piece of bicycle innertube.

The only guns that I have fired in this class that don't seem to have as much recoil are the Sigs. I have the Sig P290RS... has night sites and a long trigger pull. But unlike the Rugers and the Keltecs, the trigger is smooth, like a double action revolver. It is small, but it is heavier, so many believe it to be too big for pocket carry. The Sig P938 or the Sig P238 are also nice shooters in the size package you are looking for, but they are quite a bit more expensive.

Check out this video of the LCP... Pay more attention to when he is shooting it, at about the 3:15 mark. At the 3:18 mark, he fails to let the trigger reset and tries to shoot again... watch how much he anticipates the recoil when it doesn't fire. He says it doesn't have much kick, but his handling says otherwise. Oh, and he fails at keeping the gun pointed down range, but I didn't post this as an example of firearm safety.

I have pocket carried an LCP for 4/5 years . As was mentioned the long trigger pull takes some getting use to , the recoil is unpleasant and adds time to reacquiring target in rapid fire mode . The sights are practically non existent . It has a 7 round capacity (small for most thinking) .

That being said ....I am perfectly satisfied with it . They are a point and shoot pistol , I like the long trigger pull for safety sake plus don't have to worry if safety is on or off...........it's always on . Recoil is unpleasant but manageable , practice will iron that out . I have run probably 4000 rounds through mine without a problem , take down is easy and simple . You can pocket carry one and not even know you you have in on you , easy to conceal just about anywhere . Although I haven't had any problems Ruger is famous for customer satisfaction . Just my opinion .

If you already have an LCP and some fancy holsters or paraphernalia, you can upgrade your normal LCP to like Custom features for about $75... If you go to Galloway Precision you can order an enhanced trigger, 13lb Spring, and steel recoil guide.
In the end it still won't have the raised sights, but an option if you have some specific holsters that will be expensive to replace.
