My much better half has decided to graciously bestow upon me permission to purchase another gun. Truly, she is generous beyond what I deserve.
Okay now that I'm done with the sarcasm..
I don't currently own a 1911. I am deservedly ashamed of this. I have been lusting after one for a while now. My fiancee has officially declared my bedside home defense revolver as her own which frees me up to replace it.
So, my need necessitates a tactical, defensive, beautiful (okay that's just for me), practical, and of course fun 1911 to keep in the drawer next to where I sleep. Let's go ahead and place a 1k spending limit on it so she doesn't use the revolver on me when she sees the receipt.
So, what would you masters suggest? I know there are several experts on the subject on this forum. I'd love to hear your suggestions.

I don't exactly know what caliber I'm looking for. Its primary purpose would be for a bedside defensive weapon and something to take out to the range.
Another "issue" I have is, for instance when I'm looking at Kimber 1911s, there are literally something like fifty to choose from. I'm browsing around on their website right now and it's seemingly never ending.
I suspect when I move over to Springfield's site in a few minutes I'll find the same.
This could get confusing.

I have a Kimber CDP and Ultra Carry II. I also have a Springfield Mil-Spec and even a LLama to abuse.
There are plenty to choose from. You can probably find someone who will let you try on their 1911 to see if it fits. Whether it be a full size, mid size, or compact, they all have features that will be a factor in your decision.
Since your are a new convert to the 1911 and you claim that it will be a bedside and range weapon, try a full size in 45 ACP. They are a dream to shoot with minimal recoil and you can buy one for well under 1000 bucks.

Rain just stopped....off to the range with my Kimber CDP. This will be its first firing...
Jason H.-You are where I was about 2 months ago. It IS very overwhelming but keep in mind you have plenty of time. If you are lucky enough to have good friends who have a 1911, buy them a box of ammo and see if they want to go to the range.

Reading all of these "which 1911 should I get" post has me thinking that I need to get a 1911. Having never shot one makes me wonder if they are all they are said to be. Since I am looking for a new carry gun, I guess that I can add a 3" 1911 to the mix to try. JasonH, I will be watching to see where this great forum leads you to look, so that I can look there too.

you have lots of great choices for a sub-1000 dollar 1911.
I recommend getting one with nightsights. One of my daily carries is a Kimber Custom TLE2 and I love it. It is your basic Kimber but also has a checkered strap on the grip and nightsights. I think I paid around 800 for it walkout.
Check out Springfield, Colt, Kimber, and there are many others.
