I couldn't do 20 miles in my work boots and jeans - that's why I keep a pair of old tennis shoes and some workout clothes in my truck at all times.

I was also going to ask, for that 5.11 piggyback system, does the 72 hour pack have enough rigidity to support that much weight away from your body? I have a 3 day pack (condor, I believe) that does not give enough support, so it ends up bending and putting a lot of weight on your shoulders, as I found out on a 14 mile bug out drill.
The RUSH 72 has an internal aluminum reinforcing panel that fits in a sleeve between the padding on the back, and the hydration pocket. And the yoke system in the shoulder straps helps to distribute the load better. And it has a real waste-strap, so that you can rest part of the load on your hips. It is a great pack, and I really like it. But, it ain't cheap. OTH, it is worth the price. We have two - one for my wife. (Two RUSH 24 packs too - one for my car, one for wife's - plus two sets of the Tier System straps.) The RUSH 24 pack also has a heavy-duty sheet of some kind of polymer like Kydex or something, also located in a sleeve between the padding and the hydration pocket, that acts as a reinforcing stiffener for the pack. The RUSH 24 does not come with a waste strap, although there is provision for a place to buy one if you want to purchase one as an accessory.

MSRP on the RUSH 72 is $169.95, but you can find it on Amazon for as little as $132.18, depending on what color you order.

LA Police Gear has their 3-day pack on sale right now. http://www.lapolicegear.com/diplomat-3- ... pack1.html
That's what I'd do if price was a concern.
Otherwise, I'd go with a 5.11 Rush bag. I use one of the 5.11's as a carry on while traveling. Great interior organizers. But well above your $50 budget.

I went ahead and ordered that one. Thanks for the sale tip, Legionnaire! Thanks for the great suggestions everyone, it gives me a lot to work with when I have a larger budget.

Happy to help! Give us an update (a review, if you like) when you have it in hand.

By the way, I was cleaning out my side of the master bedroom closet today, and I ran across a milsurp LC-1 rucksack with LC-3 straps that I bought a long time ago from member gregthehand. He was selling them for $35 in "like new" condition, which was a great deal. It is an external frame backpack, with a ton of capacity. The buckle system is a little weewaw, but it would make a good backpack for just carrying a lot of stuff.......i.e. firewood, or a butchered animal for instance. The shoulder straps and waist belt are actually pretty comfortable.

Anyway, this is a distinct possibility for an inexpensive bugout bag if someone doesn't mind milsurp. Omaha's in Fort Worth has them for $69.50.

These guys gear probably doesn't fall into the "budget" category, but they are a Texas company.
