Voting with LTC as ID?

Used my LTC. No issues. The people at my location were really cool. There was a bit of a line, and the guy in the hallway would ask obviously young voters if it was their first time to vote. If it was, he would make an announcement and everyone would applaud. I thought that was great.

Has anyone attempted to use their LTC as an ID for early voting? I did but was told that I had to use my driver's license. I know the LTC is listed as acceptable photo ID but was not going to edumacate the voting clerk.

I also presented my LTC and was asked for my DL instead. The clerk asked if I had my DL with me, and requested to use that instead. I wasn't told that I had to use my DL or that they couldn't use my LTC, and I didn't ask any questions. Just kindly obliged.

I don't understand this scanning thing. Is this all that common, they just looked at my driver license and compared it to the voter list. What is the need of this scan stuff? I don't think my magnetic strip will work anymore, cause it's pretty much worn off. I would be pretty upset if I were denied my right to vote just because their machines can't read my license.

In my case scanning just sped up the process. With a DL, the scanner automatically pulls up the info on a screen to verify that you are a registered voter. Hand entering the info on LTC, does the same thing but it takes a little longer. If they have a printed voter list, there should be no difference, in the time it takes.

I believe the scanning is to make sure you get the right ballot during early voting, since anyone can vote at any early voting location within their county. Some precincts are voting on bonds and local elections that differ from other precincts. On election day scanning will not be needed, since you will have to vote at your precinct designated voting location.

I was told the same thing, but I did "edumacate" the volunteer who was working the polls. After being told twice that state law required her to accept my LTC as valid ID, she relented. I was at my end though. If she had not relented at that point, I would have given her another form of ID in order to vote, and would have just filed a complaint after the fact.

Just out of curiosity, why is this a concern/issue? You drove to the polling place, why not present your DL? Just curious why the love for using the LTC as a form of identification aside from presenting it to an officer when required to?

Only my wife and a few close friends even know I have a CHL......why the desire to inform people you can carry?

I had the same experience. I wanted to use my LTC on principle, but didn't want to make the poll worker's job any more complicated or less of a positive experience for that principle. The tablet they had to verify my ID was set up to primarily read the PDF417 barcode on the back of the driver's license. These people are volunteers (well they get a very small stipend but that's not really why they're doing it) and as a past Commissioner in Charge from my parish in LA, I'm very sympathetic to their experience too. I'm proud of my LTC, I'm even prouder that it has a red "Instructor" across the top. But If it makes their job harder by insisting on the LTC, why not just hand them the card that's right next to the LTC at all times? They were polite, so I was too.

My wife and I used our LTCs on the first day of early voting in Arlington. When my wife presented hers the clerk gave her a big smile and said "Well look at you". Nice.

Why not?
Its a legal form of ID.
