[DFW] Where to find a P22

#1

Post by fisherchris »

I went by Academy today to pick up a hunting license and assorted accessories and saw a Walther P22 in the case for $299. Seemed like a good deal for a local dealer and I have been thinking about buying one for my wife since she saw one at a gun show and was one of the few that were comfortable in her hand.

BUT, when I said I would purchase the gun and would like to see it without the trigger lock the kid at the counter refused. He said once I purchased the weapon I could look at it all I wanted.

I told him I would just as soon walk out before buying a gun that I could not fully inspect first (which I was able to do with long guns purchased from the same store) to which I was told I could not. He said to go to Bullet Trap and they would let me handle the gun without it being locked up. Needless to say I walked out without it.

Is that common practice with Academy?

Is there anywhere else in the DFW area that would be good to check with for good pricing on the P22 that would let me actually completely inspect it?

It isn't company policy. I've handled several pistols at the local Academy without trigger locks. I would have asked for his store manager, and if the Store Manager refused I would have left, but I bet it was a misunderstanding on the kid's part.

Too bad you are not in Houston. I have 2 and 1 i would like to sell. An OD green one. Excellent condition, about 200 rounds thru it, bought it new and have all the stuff. I bought a long barreled Grey one recently which I like better.

Try Sportsman's Warehouse in Lewisville. That's where I got mine. they'll let you play with all their guns before you buy. I paid less than $299 including tax.

The Academy seems to be getting kind of weird with their gun rules. This may be another of them or it may just be someone that doesn't know his job.

Thanks for the feedback. I may try Sportsmans Warehouse. I did find it odd that they were practically drooling over the guys buying a new over/under shotgun for dove season but seemed less than enthusiasitc to talk to me.

I don't know why anyone would buy an over/under for dove hunting. It takes me two shots at a dove until I remember to lead the dang thing, then it's 50-50 whether or not I'll get him on the last shot.

$299 is too much for it anyway. My wife bought hers at a local gun show for quite a bit less than that. And she even got to pick it up and look at it!

The Academy store here in Katy, TX is quite the opposite. They let you handle any of the guns you are interested in. They ask if they can pull anything out to look at when you browse by the case.

I have been unable to examine a gun here in San Antonio at 2 stores w/o the trigger lock on and they will not remove it. When I bought my Glock 26 the girl brought one out of the safe to let me try the trigger on. But she was the exception. When you ask if you can see it w/o the trigger lock they act as if you want to shoot them with it.

For an outdoors store they are remarkable paranoid about handguns.
