What Do Texas Rangers Carry?

#1

Post by Crash »

Saw an older gentleman in my favorite watering hole yesterday wearing a bib-front western shirt, a straw cowboy hat and packin' a 1911 of some kind. His belt and holster had Texas star conchos, but he was not wearing--at least that I could see--a Texas ranger badge. The pistol was not cocked an locked and it did not have a grip safety. Can somebody tell me what Texas rangers carry?

Last one I saw was carrying what looked like a Sig 1911 in 45 ACP I assume.

I've never seen one wearing a bib front shirt, either.

A few years ago I was having lunch with my daughter at Whataburger. In the restaurant were two Cedar Park PD officers. Nobody paid any attention to them. After a while, three Rangers walked in and every head turned.

I noticed the nice leather rigs (matching holster, belt, mag carrier), starched white shirts and khaki pants, and the air of their presence. :txflag:

Oh, and their pistols were 1911s. :fire

I have seen several Texas Rangers and the majority i have seen carry a cocked and locked 1911 of some sort but I have seen a couple carrying a Sig P226 and also one or two carrying a Glock or some sort.

The only Ranger I've ever seen in person was in the aftermath of the 1966 UT Tower sniper mass murder (Charles Whitman). When the shootout was over and a couple thousand of us were milling around the Mall below the Tower, I saw a Texas Ranger in a dark suit & Stetson (or a Resistol - couldn't tell) carrying what appeared to be a 1928 Thompson with drum magazine propped on his hip, pointed in the air.

During the 90 minute gun battle, I heard hundreds of rounds fired, but no full auto Tommy gun action.

The last Texas Ranger I saw, was in QT in Alvarado. He was wearing a starched white shirt, starched jeans, and a silverbelly cowboy hat. He was carrying a fully engraved stainless, or nickle plated 1911, with ivory, or what looked like ivory, grips with a star on them. He was also about 6'-6" tall, so he did stand out.

Could that have been a Browning Hipower? They look sort of 1911-ish and have no grip safety.

Chambers County District Attorney Cheryl Leick is awed by Haralson.

"I started calling him, 'Gus,' from 'Lonesome Dove,' " she said, alluding to the character in Larry McMurtry's novel.

"His character is a retired Texas Ranger from the Old West days, who is tall and a badass, and has a booming voice, and always has a story to tell," she continued. "What is so funny about Joe is he is not a braggart or anything.

"He is very humble. He is not one to try and make you think he is a badass - he just is. "
