I need some support
I hand delivered my completed application on July 3, 2007. Still no license. I emailed the nice folks at the DPS and they advised me that they were still waiting on Travis County to do the background check. My record is clean, so there is no need for a lengthy review of the records. Suggestions? You folks with the quick turn arounds are making me jealous!

When in doubt, call them! Be cordial and nice, but also be specific with your questions. Your CHL should issue soon assuming that there are no issues in your background.

My record should be very clean, other than a number of speeding tickets.
I have not called; however, I have emailed the DPS and they confirmed that the hold-up was Travis County. Who does the county background check? Is it the county sheriff's office? I suppose it would do no good to contact the local sheriff.

Just a criminal check, Cajundude? Au contraire, mon frère!Cajundude wrote:Hello, I'm curious, what do they actually check in your background that takes so long? Isn't it just a criminal history?
DPS examines your local/federal criminal history; along with your state tax records, child support history (if applicable, for any arrearage), chemical dependency/psychiatric history (if applicable), and student loan history (for any defaulted loans). I'm leaving something else out, I'm sure...
It's a pretty thorough investigation (much more methodical than an FFL check for a gun transfer), but your CHL is worth the wait.
I know it's tough, but remain positive. My packet only took about a month for DPS to process, which is much quicker than years gone by. Some "older" members report waiting periods in excess of 90 days for their original licenses. DPS has definitely become more efficient.

All you can do is hang in there. There is nothing that I know of that can speed things up for you. I just keep telling myself "what's a few more weeks when I have lived this much of my life without a chl?". Of course I am still as impatient as a kid at Christmas.
