Black Friday Record Number of NICS checks

Post by rotor »

Who would have thought? 203,086 NICS checks on Black Friday. A single day record. People are still buying guns.

Dang that's impressive. Well, it would have been 203,087 if I didn't have a CHL. ;-)

I wonder if there is a way to find out how many were approved or declined? I suspect a great majority are approved.

Wonder how many purchases were made by license holders that did not go through NICS that would add to that count?
In life as in baseball, it is the number of times you reach home safely that count.

I bought a new Shield .45 acp today. It won't add to that total though.

I did a little homework and quick math.

There have been 203 million checks since '98. Of those, 1.5 million have been denied (through Oct. 2017). That's a 0.72% denial rate. If we apply the same percentage to Black Friday's numbers then 201,542 were approved. I would suspect the denial rate is lower now as most of the ineligible folks would have already weeded themselves out over the years.

You also have all the TX LTCs that made a purchase Friday that didn't have to have a NICS check. I don't know if other state's license holders can bypass NICS.

Permits also count into the NICS totals. 29% (73 million) of NICS checks ('98-'16) have been for permits. I doubt many permits were submitted on Friday.

1.16 million (0.57%) checks have been for explosives (through '16).

No matter how you slice it, that lot of guns in one day. :patriot:
