I'm definitely curious. Too bad things like this and the shockwave type shotguns don't just prove how ridiculous most of the nfa regulations are so they can be abolished. That's what logical people would.... oh wait this is government bureaucracy we are dealing with.

The short rear stock thingy is called a stabilizer, and suposedly not intended to be shouldered but braced against the wrist.ghostrider wrote:very interesting.

REFORMATION: Franklin Armory Hacks The NFA With NO SBR 11.5” AR
Franklin Armory just announced the Reformation – an 11.5 inch barreled AR15 with a stock that does not require an NFA Tax Stamp. Would you like to know the secret? Are you ready? Lean in really close to your computer/mobile device/teletype machine:
I HAVE NO CLUE HOW THE REFORMATION GET AROUND BEING AN NFA FIREARM.
But I made a few guesses, as did other staff here at TFB. Here goes:
Smoothbore barrel – averts rifle definition?
26” OAL with a barrel less than 16” – averts rifle definition?
One pull of the trigger, one round fires – averts rifle definition?

My money goes to something hinky with the trigger. Like how the binary trigger is legal here, or the goofy trigger system that the Brits use to skirt around the semiauto rifle law they have.

Stealth marketing is really annoying.
Facts, give us facts.
Caliber or gauge, or, or, or, facts, darn it, I want facts or your latest whiz bang-boom will not be in my arsenal.
Yeah, yeah, I realize this sort of bogus marketing ploy is supposed to create buzz, but for recalcitrant curmudgeons like me all it does is aggravate and make me pay zero attention to any further marketing nonsense.

That's interesting enough to make me think I might get interested in ARs.
I wonder what the short range ballistics of a smooth bore [insert typical AR caliber here] actually are, and how they compare to rifled. "Short range" being less than 100 meters, maybe even 50.

My guess: The bullet does not spin, therefore it is unstable, and accuracy suffers while bullet upset during terminal ballistics would occur earlier along the wound path.ELB wrote:That's interesting enough to make me think I might get interested in ARs.

But here’s the thing. Franklin Arsenal’s claim to fame is accuracy. Their M1As May cost a 50%-100% premium over the price of a Springfield, but they are much more painstakingly made and more accurate. I don’t think they would take on a project that would necessarily make a firearm inherently less accurate.

The Magpul SL is just a regular stock, so it can't be a pistol

But how much does accuracy suffer over a short distance? For PDW type weapon, especially in civilian engagement, typical SD distances with maybe a mob scene as worst case, it might not be enough to matter. Even to Franklin, with the abundance of ARs out now, bans/confiscations held off for a little while at least, accuracy is nice but revenue is necessary. :)The Annoyed Man wrote: ...My guess: The bullet does not spin, therefore it is unstable, and accuracy suffers while bullet upset during terminal ballistics would occur earlier along the wound path.
...
Also maybe they are developing an ammo for it. A rifled slug, like a shotgun?

They can call it an SBR or a grapefruit. There is no truth in advertising.

Re: Franklin Armory coming out with non-NFA 11.5” AR variant
So a guy on Soldiersystems.net says he called the factory and asked if it was a smoothbore, and they said no, but wouldn't cough up anything more than that.

Lotta speculation there on the trigger system. I don't understand the trigger business and how it plays with law and ATF rulings. so I guess I will just have to wait and see.

Is there another way to carve the inside of a barrel that stabilizes bullets but is not technically/legally "rifling"?
