Best Results In Cleaning Rust

I have a S&W Model 36 no dash. It has been setting in the box with Smith's "oil paper." I just noticed there is a small spot of rust on the cylinder .

Question comes as to what you use to clean the rust and try to prevent it from becoming worse? Have read some good things on EEZOX, but wanted to get some opinions.

I had great luck doing the same thing on my father's Sweet Sixteen with Eezox on a cleaning patch. I couldn't even tell where the spots were.

To be honest, I suspect any good gun oil would have done the same.

Fine steel wool soaked in Dexron transmission fluid to remove rust. Touch up blue if needed.

Alright thanks. I do a quick wipe down with an oily rag at the end of every day. (and I field strip and clean it about once a month) I hope that'll keep my gun from rusting.

That is what I failed to do. Something I don’t shoot on a regular basis just sets in the safe.

Do you do this just for your EDC or for every gun in your safe? Admirable either way, but much more impressive if you are pulling guns out of your safes and wiping them down daily.

Well as it is right now I only have my EDC gun and my shotgun. I wipe down my shotty once a week cause it just sits in it's sock until i hear something go bump in the night... speaking of gun safes tho.... since my dad passed i dont think my mom has maintained any of his guns... i should probably stop by and give em all a quick cleaning. I'll probably be inheriting them some day. better keep em in pristine condition lol

This is what I use. Looks like steel wool but won’t mess up any of your finishes. Works great.

Whatever you do, don't use Navel Jelly. After hurricane Ike, I had some badly rusted magazines. The navel jelly did a great job of cleaning the rust off but it also stripped off the blueing.

I use Kroil and Extra Fine Bronze wool on blued firearms.

I went with the EEZOX and it worked great. The spot was very very little so I am glad I caught it when I did. You can't even tell it was ever there.
