Shopping at Walmart

My wife and I stopped at one of the WalMart's in Weatherford to check ammo prices, and Blazer was still $7.57 for .40 cal S&W. I asked the 2 clerks how many boxes they had and they said about 20. I said sounds good, I'll take it.

The younger clerk said 2 things to the older, that I found funny.
1. If I sell it all to him we won't have anymore. The older clerk said that was okay, they could order more.

2. The other question was regarding any limits as to how much they could sell me. The older clerk said there were no limits, which seemed to disappoint the younger guy. I also said we didn't live in a communist state like Massachusets or California. I think he was worried about what I was going to do with 1000 rounds of ammo, but the older guy just stated I was stocking up, especially when I told them that the same ammo in Dallas is $9.97 a box.

My wife was wondering if the younger guy was going to call Homeland Security on us, but we completed our trip without incidence.

Next weekend when we go to Abilene for my grandson's first birthday, I'll stock up on .45 ACP ($9.47 a box)

That's funny! We're lucky in that most of the clerks that work at the Walmart ammo counter know me from living here for most of my life BUT the idea of buying 20 boxes at our local walmart is inconceivable. It barely has more than 1 or 2 boxes of any caliber at at any given time on stock AND we've never seen great prices there.

It's worth it for us to drive almost 30 miles to the nearest Academy for the best prices.

I went to WalMart a few month ago just to get a couple hundred 9mm rounds. I had the same elderly clerk I usually ended up with. When he asked what I needed I asked for some "bullets" (as opposed to asking for ammunition). He seemed noticibly nervous about my request after that but gave me what I came for. He did check my ID though although he normally doesn't. I guess the bad guys buy "bullets" and legit people only buy "ammunition".

Interesting one he hasn't started remembering me yet and two how much difference one synonym can make over another.

Next time, I'll bring a passport with me to show them so that they can verify my age.

I would expect that the "bullets vs. ammunition" discomfort comes from this:
Bullets and ammunition are NOT synonymous. Ammunition contains bullets, but not all bullets are loaded into ammunition; the bullet is merely part of the ammunition, and can be bought separately. What caused the alarm was likely the fact that gangbangers and thugs aren't usually well-educated, and often call all ammunition "bullets." Because you called it that, it rang his "stereotype alert," making him nervous about potentially selling ammunition to the wrong person.

I stopped shopping for ammo at Wal-Mart. The past couple of times I've attempted to buy it there the ammo counter was completely empty. Last time I waited fifteen minutes after they made three or four calls over the PA system and nobody showed up.

The new Bass Pro seems to have some great deals. I'll hopefully be able to stick with them.

Feel lucky you even got someone to help you in the ammo section. Around here the outdoor section at WalMart looks like a Kamikaze convention. All it needs is tumbleweeds to go rolling by!

They should ask somebody at K-Mart or the ol' Builders Square (remember them?) what happens when they don't hire enough people to service the customers. Sam Walton is probably rolling in his tomb!

What almost comical is that Wal-Mart's prices are not uniform between the stores. I know of two stores, less than 10 miles apart, who sell ammo at different prices. One has Blazer Brass .40 180fmj for $7.57 a box, the other is $9.95. That's about a 25% difference.

I've found that Wal-Mart is the best place to stock up on cheap target ammo (never can have too much) but you'll probably have to go elsewhere for good self defense ammo for most calibers. Wally World will stock a few very basic hollow point rounds, but that's limited to only a few calibers. And even those aren't impressive; you won't find any federal hydrashoks, gold dot speers, or corbons there.

One clerk told me that even Cabela's buys their ammo from Wal-Mart for resale when they run out of a particular kind. That shows a healthy markup for the big sporting goods stores right there.

I've seen some write-ups that suggest that ammo breaks up when it passes the air-water barrier, and that shots fired sub-surface have a very short range (~200 ft. from a rifle). I guess it all depends on what you are shooting.
