Massive explosion in Beiruit today

A huge explosion has taken place in Beirut, Lebanon in the past few hours.
There is VERY little information available now, but the video shows it to be devastating

I've had Fox News on the past hour. At least 60 evidently confirmed dead and it's believed thousands have been injured. Much of the port area was flattened and buildings even miles from the blast site have seen damage, balconies fallen, windows shattered. This was a Bomb with a capital B. One resident who was over 500 yards from the site said that he was literally knocked off his feet by the blast.

Abbas Ibrahim, chief of Lebanese security, said the explosion might have been caused by highly explosive material (possibly ammonium nitrate) that was confiscated from a ship some time ago and stored at the port. So the actual cause of the blast seems to be unclear at this time.

And it may be at the worst possible time for Lebanon, hit by both a financial crisis and the pandemic. In recent weeks the value of the Lebanese pound has tumbled against the dollar; the pandemic is placing business/employment restrictions, and simultaneously the practical value of people's savings is shrinking rapidly.

Earlier reports said it was a fireworks manufacturing plant, that would bring the thought of ALOT of silver nitrate and other powders used to make firecrackers! That stuff is very potent in large quantities!

It's been confirmed that 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate seized from a cargo ship six years ago was stored in the warehouse that exploded. The ammonium nitrate was blasting grade used for mining.

That’s what it looked like from the video. That rapid expulsion of a water vapor ring ring behind the shock wave.

What knuckle head stored that much NH4NO3 in one place. Crazy.

I worked for Monsanto 40 years ago at a plant that made ammonium nitrate. Most of it was used for fertilizer but some was sent to another facility to mix it with fuel oil to make ANFO explosives. Ammonium nitrate, on its own, will not explode. The explosion of the ship (loaded with ammonium nitrate fertilizer), that was parked at the dock by the Monsanto Texas City Plant back in 1947, occurred because the holds were closed up when a fire started in one of the holds. The thinking was that closing the holds would put out the fire but ammonium nitrate is an oxidizer. The fire did not go out and the ship turned into a huge bomb that killed over 600 people. Would be interesting to find out how the ammonium nitrate was detonated in Beirut.

I was waiting for your take on this Beiruty. My prayers for you and your kinfolk that are still there.

Thank you all. My wife uncle was fishing near the seaport. He survived but was pulled out from under debris.
He was sent home with broken bones and bruises.
I saw a photo of him. He looked like a zombie, or 9/11 survivor
So sad. I saw many videos of innocent casualties but did dare to share them online
