I love statistics. You can prove just about anything if you're clever enough with how you parse the data and phrase the results.

How many of those 94% counted as having "underlying conditions" were simply 10 pounds overweight, or had mild hypertension? Or some other spooky sounding "underlying condition" that's actually incredibly common?

I wonder who the CDC was trying to placate with this bit of statistical whitewashing?

just over 9k of real covid caused deaths. yes the cdc conned everyone. the information is on their website, it takes a few hours to drill through the data. face book and twitter claimed it as false. so that in itself says the real deaths of just over 9k are TRUE :anamatedbanana

The data is published weekly at: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covi ... orbidities.

And I'm not quite sure what the hullabaloo is from Fox News or any other sources, really. The CDC has been tracking this exact same data since February and publishing it every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Eastern since the start of May. If you want the whole dataset, go here https://data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Conditions-co ... /hk9y-quqm, and in the row with the button "View Data," click on "Export" and you can get it in a few different formats; in Excel (as a CSV) you'll get, as of this week, over 12,200 rows of data.

Not a doctor so I can't comment on how or exactly what co-morbidity conditions are tracked or precisely how they're defined; there's some explanation here, though: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covi ... _notes.htm. The CDC uses the current revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internati ... f_Diseases). In that technical notes link, the CDC says:
Coronavirus disease deaths are identified using the ICD–10 code U07.1. Deaths are coded to U07.1 when coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 are reported as a cause that contributed to death on the death certificate. These can include laboratory confirmed cases, as well as cases without laboratory confirmation. If the certifier suspects COVID-19 or determines it was likely (e.g., the circumstances were compelling within a reasonable degree of certainty), they can report COVID-19 as “probable” or “presumed” on the death certificate.
Again, not sayin' correct or wrong, right or left, accurate or not. Just that this reporting has been publicly available in exactly this format for four and a half months now.

From what I have seen, the hullabaloo recently is about how to define a COVID death and the way CDC reports it. The CDC recently reported that 94% of the people who had died from COVID also had some co-morbidity. People who want to say that COVID is not as serious jumped on this to say that COVID really only killed 6% of the deaths and the co-morbidities would have killed the rest. People who want to show COVID is more serious say these people would have lived with their other problems anyway if they had not caught COVID.

I believe that the truth on COVID is probably somewhere in the middle. Some of the people with COVID and co-morbidities certainly would have died anyway. I am also certain some of them would have lived for years anyway. One of the best examples of the problem is when they list obesity as the existing condition. A person can be as few as 20 pounds overweight or as much as 100 pounds overweight and still be obese. I think the guy with the extra 20 pounds would probably last a long time, but the guy with the extra 100 pounds is probably close to a life threatening condition already.

The real problem is that by listing the existing conditions, it confuses how serious COVID is. This happens with other diseases also. Flu for example is much more deadly in the elderly and in people with compromised immune systems than it is in healthy younger people.

I remember one statement from an author asking if a person who is more than 80 can really be said to have died from anything other than old age.

I gotcha. My point, though, was that it wasn't only recently reported: the CDC has been publishing the same weekly report for four and half months. And they don't use their own fabricated classifications; what/how they report is structured by the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM)--soon to be the 11th revision, I think https://www.who.int/classifications/icd/en/--which standard is managed by the WHO. The CDC records influenza deaths the same way. And they get the data from the physician/hospital-filed death certificates, not from any polling or survey that the CDC does.

I can't say why this suddenly hit the limelight, but my guess is that some research intern at a local Fox affiliate looked at the August 26 weekly update--with no knowledge of or reference to all the 18 other weekly updates that have come out--and thought to himself, "Oh, wow!" The Fox affiliate had it online within a few hours, and boom, all over social media. President Trump even picked up on it. But it ain't new news.

Yeppers. I'm with you double-time. When I was much younger and lifted a lot more, I used to have this...discussion with a primary care doctor that I eventually dropped. Every time I'd go in, I'd get a lecture about being obese...per the BMI calculation which is also what the WHO goes by. I'd point out that I carried right around 10% body fat, and that muscle weighs about 20% more than fat...and then I'd offer to go out into the parking lot and lift the rear of a Honda Civic for him. Didn't matter. To him my BMI was over 30, therefore I was obese. But I would still keep that BMI-over-30 in that same physical condition if I was able now that I'm older; alas. Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson has a BMI of 32.

It's definitely an imperfect system, but I think the U.S. does it in a standardized fashion and as well as any place around the globe. And I think we're more transparent about the data than most. The Poynter Institute posted a fact-check piece on this yesterday: https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2 ... 4-to-9210/. They quoted Dr. Mark Halstead, an associate professor of orthopedic surgery and pediatrics at Washington University, to show how conditions get listed on a death certificate:
“So, let’s say someone was admitted to the hospital because of symptoms of COVID. They test positive, so COVID would be listed,” Halstead said in the post. “Their case progressed where they developed respiratory failure and now are on a ventilator. Respiratory failure can be listed.”

Additional conditions may be listed on a patient’s death certificate during the course of their stay in the hospital. For example, if a COVID-19 patient ended up dying from cardiac arrest, that could also be included.

“So now three things are listed on their death certificate,” Halstead wrote. “The COVID infection started the process but that led to the heart and lungs failing, which killed that person.”
From the CDC/NCHS perspective, it makes sense to me that the only real data they can go by are death certificates. I don't know where else they could look. If a 95-year-old who has stage 4 cancer is admitted to a hospital due to COVID-19 (or influenza), is it realistic to think that the virus was the only thing that killed her? 'Course not. But I suppose the point is she had the virus so we can't say it wasn't a contributing factor; she may have lived a couple of months longer if she hadn't caught the virus. I also think it's going to be interesting when the seasonal flu gets in full swing and we have patients who have both the flu and are COVID-19 positive. Both may be on the death certificate, so do they count the death twice, once for the flu and once for COVID? Dunno...

Well said, Steve. On another forum, an ED MD chimed in that in general it is rare that one cause of death is listed.
