Tazer carry?
Ok guys, question time. Is a licensed CHL holder legally able to carry tazer concealed? Or does the CHL affect the legality of it at all? I searched the forum and found several discussions, but didn't find anything definitive (or maybe I just missed it). I'm sure that the answer is out there, but I'm betting that someone on this forum will be able to answer the question a lost more easily and a lot faster that I would be in researching it.
The reason I ask is because a buddy of mine has a sister that is scared to death of firearms, but she wants some sort of protection. And trust me; we've tried all different tactics to introduce her to shooting, even if only to familiarize her with handguns. We both have no doubt that she'd easily pass the class and shooting portion of the CHL course, but she refuses to own a gun. Sometimes there’s just no use in trying to reason with people.
If all else fails I’m going to recommend to him that he invest in some good quality OC spray.
As always thanks guys.

Texas law is completely silent on the possession and use of Tazers.
You didn't ask, so ignore me if I'm going off the deep end here, but someone who is "afraid of guns" probably has other issues that would get in the way of effective self defense with any weapon. I would try to get her into a Refuse to Be a Victim or NRA Personal Protection course where other women can talk some sense into her.

That's kind of what I was thinking too. Seems that a tazer can miss just like a handgun, whereas OC is a little more forgiving as far as use under stress. Either way I think the idea of a class as Seamus said would be wise.txinvestigator wrote:n my opinion she would do better with pepper spray (OC).
I guess she's not so affraid of guns as she is anti-gun. As such maybe a class would help her to see the other side, or at least entertain the idea that they're not so bad after all.
Either way thanks for the help.

Penn & Teller did a show on gun control that made a HUGE difference with my girlfriend in her attitude towards guns. This may or may not make an immediate difference for your friend's sister, but it sure will make her think - and that's the key to getting someone started on the right track. A word of caution - there is quite a bit of language in this video that some may find offensive. It makes some great points, and very persuasive arguments.SigM4 wrote:That's kind of what I was thinking too. You can also download the video using the "download" button on the right of the linked page, which will give you a higher-quality version of the video and eliminate lag that you may get from the streaming version.
[EDIT] It seems that the large downloadable file has been removed and all that's available on the site is a smaller mp4 file for IPODs. I should have the original saved somewhere. If you want the better version, message me and I'll see if I can find it for you.

Tasers have another drawback in my view. As soon as you turn the power off, the BG recovers. (I'm just going by what I have seen on "Cops" here.)
This is fine if you have backup, where someone can cuff the BG while the other holds the taser as a threat. (i.e. "Cooperate or I'll zap you again.") But for someone alone it would be a problem.
OC spray has somewhat of a lasting effect, for a few minutes at least. So the idea would be to spray the BG and then use the time where he can't see too well and is in pain to run away.
At least that's how I see it.

They make a model that sticks into the target and shocks him for 30 seconds while you presumably escape.frankie_the_yankee wrote:Tasers have another drawback in my view. As soon as you turn the power off, the BG recovers.
I don't know far you can get in 30 seconds, but there's going to be a really angry assailant coming after you.

So you have to leave the taser there to provide power to the probes for the 30 sec.? Seems like the BG could then gather it up and come after you with it and use it on you.seamusTX wrote:They make a model that sticks into the target and shocks him for 30 seconds while you presumably escape.frankie_the_yankee wrote:Tasers have another drawback in my view. In my case, not very far.seamusTX wrote: I don't know far you can get in 30 seconds, but there's going to be a really angry assailant coming after you.
But it would give me time to draw my gun.

It's a gun that shoots a cartridge that sticks in the target. You keep the gun.frankie_the_yankee wrote:So you have to leave the taser there to provide power to the probes for the 30 sec.? Seems like the BG could then gather it up and come after you with it and use it on you.

BTW, there's some interesting stuff on that page. The cartridges are serial numbered, so they can be traced if used illegally. They also have a free replacement guarantee if used against a criminal.

It doesn't work that way Jim. Once you fire the darts the cartridge stays attached to the TASER. The power comess from the battery in the handle of the TASER.seamusTX wrote:It's a gun that shoots a cartridge that sticks in the target. You can remove the cartridge and attach another one.
Also, it gives a 10 second burst. if you press the trigger twice more during the initial burst cycle, it then gives 30 seconds.
It has enough power for 150 ten second bursts. Continually holding the trigger down will result in a discharge until you release the trigger, or the TASER runs out of juice.
You either have to detach the cartridge or drop the TASER to run away.

Considering the relatively short recovery time, that doesn't seem to give you much of a head start. IMO, Tasers are only good if you have backup or a gun to use if the BG doesn't get the message and back off.srothstein wrote:Taser's recommended use of the civilian version is to give the BG a thirty second burst, drop the Taser, and run away. This is why they will give you the free replacement if you do use it on a BG.

ATLANTA -- An Atlanta man was shot five times when he used a taser to fight off a carjacker.
Officials said the incident happened Wednesday afternoon on Forest Park Road near Conley Road in southeast Atlanta.
Police were called the scene after receiving a call that a man armed with a gun jumped into the victim’s van and told him to drive. Police said the victim gave the man money but at the same time, he tasered the man. Officials said the man then shot the victim five times.
The van crashed into a tree after the incident and the gunman fled. Police are still looking for him.
Officials also said it is not a good idea to use a taser against someone armed with a gun, especially in a confined area.
The victim’s name and condition has not been released but he was alert when he arrived at the hospital.
