I shot my first IDPA event today

What a great time with a great group of people. I was pretty green, but everyone was very helpful and I learned a great deal. If you haven't tried IDPA yet, go for it. You wont' regret it!

A few things I would do different:
1. Bring a button up shirt to use as concealment
2. Bring at least 3 magazines
3. Spend time ahead of the event drawing my gun from a holster
4. Know how operate the safety and mag release without looking
5. Practice grip and finger control
6. Start IDPA SOONER!

I can't wait for the next meet!
Be thankful we're not getting all the government we're paying for.

I used to spend hours and hours target practicing at the gun range. I tried to learn the perfect grip, the perfect stance, the perfect sight picture and thought I was pretty good. Once I tried IDPA, I very seldom do lane shooting anymore. IDPA really stands for I Don't Practice Anymore. IDPA is so much more fun and a few steps closer to what a real encounter would be like.

Congrats. I see a lot of good times in your future. What class did you shoot in? What kind of gun do you shoot? How many folks were at the match? What club did you shoot with?

I shot in the SSP class (I think) with an H&K Compact 40. Someone mentioned that my gun should be ESP, so I'm not sure. The group hosting the event was Texas Tactical and there were ~30 shooters. My times were lousy, but it sure beat punching holes in paper at the range!

I have shot with the Texas Tactical in the past and they are top notch! It sounds likes you have some very realistic goals set for yourself. Keep us posted on how things are going and ask a lot of questions  I like to read the answers!

oh yeah......let me be the first person here to welcome you to your new addiction.

I think your H&K could be shot in either SSP or ESP depending on the condition you start in. Decocked or cocked and locked.

Thanks MoJo, you are right. Here's the section from the rule book:

"Double action, double action only and safe action pistols compete in Stock Service Pistol Division (SSP). Any gun that can be used in SSP can be used in Enhanced Service Pistol Division (ESP) or Custom Defensive Pistol Division (CDP), depending upon the caliber. Otherwise, single action guns compete in ESP or CDP, depending upon caliber."

I was using my H&K USP cocked and locked. Based on the rules, I should be ESP since I was in Single Action mode. Not that it really matters; I was not a competitive treat to anyone!

I still have tell myself {slow down.....take your time....SLOW DOWN}....sometimes I have a problem beibg told what to do.....even it is ME doing the telling....LOL

The main thing is ........ HAVE FUN n' BE SAFE

I started IDPA with a USP 45f and after about 4 times went and bought a cheapo 1911. Times went way down. I love the look and feel of the HK but 1911 is faster for me.
