I'm not sure if this is right place for this question, but here goes anyway...
My sons' school is having a fund raising auction next month, and I'd like to donate a gun for the auction. Are there any special rules or issues that I need to be aware of?
BTW -- I can get written permission from the school's chief administrator to have the rifle at the auction, but I want to make sure there aren't any other "gotchas."
Thanks!

Re: School Auction Question
Most people who use firearms as prizes use an FFL to perform the transfer. This seems like a good idea to me.

Use an FFL for the transfer, but people still want to see what they're bidding on.

Re: School Auction Question
I am assuming you meant that the auction is at the school. IANAL, but I think that written permission doesn't matter. It would still be illegal to have the gun in a school building.wrightcrew wrote:BTW -- I can get written permission from the school's chief administrator to have the rifle at the auction, but I want to make sure there aren't any other "gotchas."

Re: School Auction Question
If you get written permission, then you are okay, whether in the buildings or on school grounds where the auction is taking place. This is pursuant to Texas law. If you are a CHL, then you are also okay under federal law, but if you aren't a CHL, then you will violate the federal gun-free school zone statute.

Here is the Texas TPC provision that controls:

Re: School Auction Question
Thanks Chas. I guess that makes sense for having school sponsored shooting matches.
