Reaching for the wallet
While waiting for my plastic to arrive I've been doing the practice conceal around the house. What I have noticed, when I reach to for my wallet (right hip pocket), sometimes my shirt rides up and the top of my gun displays.
Any ideas out there? Switch the side I place my wallet? Bigger shirts (already at the XL stage)? Am I being to self-conscious?

I keep my pistol on my right hip and my wallet in my front left pocket. It works well for me.

I hate having wallet on left, but always do so when properly attired.rgraham541 wrote:While waiting for my plastic to arrive I've been doing the practice conceal around the house. Re: Reaching for the wallet
My biggest adjustment in the way I dress has been to wear untucked shirts, which I don't really like doing, but I couldn't find a better way. I have tuckable holsters, but with my body shape I get a fait amount of printing if I do anything but stand still with a tucked shirt.rgraham541 wrote:While waiting for my plastic to arrive I've been doing the practice conceal around the house. I have had to move my cell phone to the right side, which feels "wrong", but that keeps me from uncovering the spare mag on my belt when I reach for the phone. And I also had to move my wallet from the right back pocket, I usually keep it in a cargo pocket of my pants, or in a jacket pocket.
You're doing the right thing by practicing carrying around the house. You'll figure out what works for you, and it's nice if you have someone who can critique your concealment. It's hard to see how much a gun shows prints, etc.if you wear it behind the hip.
We all tend to be too self-conscious starting out, even though the gun is completely hidden, the first few times out you might feel that everybody is watching you.

I have to dress in professional clothing so I had to downsize my weapon and carry a P3AT (I have a Ruger LCP on backorder) in a pocket holster or in a DeSantis EZ-Rider.Fosforos wrote:My biggest adjustment in the way I dress has been to wear untucked shirts, which I don't really like doing, but I couldn't find a better way.

Re: Reaching for the wallet
An IWB holster worn with an untucked shirt or leather vest works well for me. When appropriate, a sport jacket covers everything up just fine.
Look for shirts that are woven, not knit. (Knit shirts cling and print. Woven fabrics will bulge and crease randomly, breaking up the outline of the gun. Get shirts with an elastic gather at the bottom. The shirt will "balloon" a bit above the gather and hide the gun.
I'm not a fan of the tuckable type holsters. They hide the gun enough as far as the law goes, but IMO almost anybody can tell you're carrying if they look for it. And for all of that, they are very slow to draw from.
And you can always get a Keltec P32 (cheap) or one of the featherweight S&W revolvers (expensive) and carry in a good pocket holster.

Re: Reaching for the wallet
I have been using a "wallet" similar to this for six years now. I keep it in my front pocket, even before I got the CHL Bug. It is does not take up much room in your pants/shorts and when I am wearing scrubs I keep it in my front shirt pocket. I can't stand driving and having a traditional wallet in my back pocket.
If all else fails you could get a "Manpurse"! LOL! You could probably keep a handgun in there too! Maybe those Europeans had a good idea..

Re: Reaching for the wallet
I carry my wallet on the opposite side of my pistol, in the back pocket. This way if someone does try to rob you, you can toss the wallet with your weak hand, while drawing (if necessary) with your right hand.

Re: Reaching for the wallet
For the record I switched which side that I carry my wallet when I started carrying. It was wierd at first but I got use to it.

Re: Reaching for the wallet
you could try wearing a button up open with an undershirt with your carry underneath the undershirt

What kind of shirt is this?rgraham541 wrote:While waiting for my plastic to arrive I've been doing the practice conceal around the house. What I have noticed, when I reach to for my wallet (right hip pocket), sometimes my shirt rides up and the top of my gun displays.

Personally, I carry a Hi-Power OWB with an untucked work shirt as concealment. At first, I had problems with needing to fiddle with the shirt while sitting or whatever to keep the end of my holster from showing. I went to a Dickies store and bought shirts the next size up (went from XL to XXL) and found that their shirts are also considerably longer, proportionally speaking. They do a great job in concealing my pistol, and I'm comfortable with a full range of movement without having to re-adjust.
As far as the wallet goes, I carry mine in my left rear pocket. I also carry a dual spare mag carrier at about 8:00, and was concerned about it showing while getting my wallet when I first started using it. Fortunately, the long nature of my work shirts keeps it concealed even when I get my wallet out. Basically, I just lift up the shirt where my wallet is and retrieve it, while the length of the shirt ensures that it doesn't lift up enough on the left and expose the mag carrier.
Here's a couple of pictures illustrating how I carry. Note that these were before I went to the larger/longer shirts and started carrying a mag carrier. Also, when it's windy or I am engaged in some sort of activity that my shirt is likely to come open enough to expose my gun, I button one of the bottom buttons.

If you're carrying IWB, I'd say a longer shirt will do the trick for you with your wallet on the right. If it's a t-shirt, you might consider going one size up to ensure that you don't print too badly when lifting it up to retrieve your wallet or moving in a way that would cause the shirt to tighten against your body. Once you start carrying, you can go to the store and try it out in the dressing room to see what works best for you. In the meantime, you can still go and try the larger size to see if it looks OK on you in general.
