But if you always treat a firearm like it is loaded (and I mean Always) the risk is minimized, but your correct in that there is no 100% with the human brain.
My 13 year old twins shoot and clean firearms with me all the time, I have trained them since they were 8 to check and double check a weapon. If I hand them a gun without looking in the chamber they will hand it back to me to check, then I hand it to them and they check again. Sometimes we will do dry fire exersizes at which point all live ammo is locked down and only dummy rounds are at hand. And we have a safe area to point the firearm when squezeing the trigger (but that is an intentional trigger pull).

Good for you...I converted to Glocks back in 2000 when I couldn't keep my 1911s running right.

By the way, my current G17 has over 27,000 rounds through it without a malfunction, and I have never worn out a plastic guide rod

I really love the feel of my Kimber Raptor. It's great, it's pretty, it shoot's like a champ. But I carry my Glock G30 most of the time. I have a G21 SF in the night stand with an Insight M6X on it, and I have 2 G 17's in the safe. The 17's are generation 2's that I bought used from an officer friend of mine, and the others are new generation 3's. I really do like most guns, Sig, XD's, 1911's, HK's. I just like to shoot. But I depend on the Glock for my family's safety 99% of the time. I think you made a good choice. Especially if you're happy with it and you can shoot well with it. I've changed to Trijicon sights on all my Glocks, and all but one of them are totally stock. One of my G17's I play with just for fun. I've got a JP Enterprises mag well on it, 3.5 lb trigger, and I'm looking for an extended, threaded, stainless barrel. But that's just because I have 2 of them. Have fun and enjoy the Glock!

I just had to add my congratulations on your purchase. I have a G17, G22 and G27. Usually have the G27 on me. I've never had any problems with my Glocks, and they are the only thing I'll purchase. Especially to carry. Now, I might buy something just to collect though, I do reserve that right.

Antique weapon designs are a thing of beauty (wheelocks, flintlocks, 1911's) however, when it comes to defending my life, I prefer modern designs, most especially the Glock design.

When pulse beam/laser handguns go into production, I'm sure Glocks will then fall into the 1911category...

I gotta say there must be a reason that 99% of guns I see on the hip of a LEO is a glock. Just my observation, and there has got to be a bigger reason than cost, since many cops buy the gun, rather than the PD. I believe the FBI uses the 22 and 23.

I have an FBI friend who works out of the Baltimore field office and he carries a G22. I don't know if he has a choice or not on what he carries though. He's a bomb tech guy. I also saw a couple of female agents at Top Gun one afternoon and if I'm not mistaken they also had Glocks.

I would suggest that you start asking the officers. Of course, they will tell you that Glock is a good gun that goes bang every time you pull the trigger, and that it is very low maintenance. But, when i changed to a department that let me carry what I wanted (no revolvers or single action semi's) I chose Glock because they have a very good LEO purchase program. I can buy a new Glock 22 for about $400 under their LEO program, and the next best factory discount is Sig, who gives about $50 off the price of the pistol. For me, it really was the price that was the deciding factor.

Fortunately, this department lets me carry single action semi's, so I am back to a 1911. And explaining the purchase of a new duty gun to my wife, when I had a perfectly good Glock was not easy. Now, I have to explain why I am buying an AR for work when she knows I prefer wood rifles in calibers that begin with 7.62

This is why I'll be purchasing my first Glock, a 22, in a couple of weeks. (I'm an Army Veteran and the LEO discount applies to me as well). CopStop (in Pearland) has the new Glock 22, with 3 15-rd magazines (versus 2 with the civilian package) for $428.95 plus tax.
