I have found that what personal defense ammo you use depends on how picky your gun is. I tried the Remington Golden Sabre in my USP .45 and had a few hangups in 100 rounds, and tried the Federal Premium Hydra-Shock with no problems in 100 rounds. These are my results. Others I know have had different results.

Although, I have recently talked with several LEO's and CHL holders and tried the Gold Dot ammo at their recommendation. In both my USP .45 and P3AT I had no problems at all. Chambered well, no screwups or anything. T

he Gold Dot ammo was recommended because it mushrooms more than any other round in ballistics tests. (As I am told. Not seen test results myself)

.38Sp - Whatever SWC is cheap - it's primarily a critter/target gun
.380 - Hydrashok, Gold Dot, Golden Saber
9mm - Hornady XTP, until I get around to testing others
.45ACP - Hydrashok, Gold Dot, Golden Saber
.30-06, .243, .22WMR - Any JSP; does it really matter?
12ga - whatever's in it, but meaning to order some 3.5" 00 buck

So far, the Gold Dot, Golden Saber, and Hydrashok all do fine in everything I've tried them in, so I just use whichever I can find a deal on, with a slight preference for Golden Sabers.

The rifles are going to overpenetrate at home defense ranges anyway, and accuracy at less than two barrel lengths is hardly a function of the ammo, so I just throw in whatever I have laying around. The .22WMR wouldn't be my first choice, but since it's the main varmint gun, it's always kept handy.

.45 ACP My kimber will eat whatever ball I put through it, but I like the Federal 230 Grain Hydra-shok. Thats all I have ever tried in it, and it loves them.

.380 My Beretta does not like Cor-Bon at all, so It gets 90 grain Hydra Shoks

.223 Hornaday TAP 55 Grain

.30 Carbine Corbon DPX 100 Grain

12 GA Federal Power Shok 00 Buck/ Federal Power Shok Slug

I have a winchester 742 in .308 that I am trying to get a better stock for. I am open to suggestion for "long range" ammo for that.

Hmm, no one has mentioned this one yet:

.380 Auto -- Winchester Supreme 95 gr. SXT

Runs well in my P3-AT, but I may need to investigate the Hydro and Carbon options to compare.

.45- Hornady 230gr +P JHP's for carry. Federal 230 FMJ for paper punching.

.357 magnum Federal FMJ's or winchester white box for punching. And Cor-Bon 140gr JHP's for carry.

That's all I have to carry, but gimme a break, I'm a youngin...
